Just felt obligated to chime in here….

Anyone have a copy of the original? A cheap scan? Photocopy? Anything? Parts of it? A good review might even be ok I guess.

I played II a few times, kinda enjoyed it. Own III, didn't care for the changes….seemed to lower the parts I liked about II. Watched IV a few times. Usually got bored and wandered off after a turn. V? Saw a game at Nashcon once. Four house later they were on turn three. Not into self abuse that much. Wouldn't mind taking a look at the original though.

Sultan Sam is looking for a pdf of Empire and/or Stars and Bars. Can anyone here help him out?

Ah, the fast play variant!

Saxondog24 Apr 2010 10:52 p.m. PST

House? I actually let that slide? I know I'm not a very good typist but "house"? (shudder) Maybe a commercial for the show "House M.D." played across the tellie.

Yeah, it was five guys sitting at a table by the back wall. They were a couple tables over from something I was interested in. Think they were speeding things up for a couple of the guys who had never played their rules before.

I sent all my Empire rules stuff to Chicago to be given away to interested gamers at Little Wars… I haven't talked to the friend who went to the convention to see if he had any takers. Will

I don't think that there are very many Napoleonic rules sets that would consider Empire (in any of its forms) as competition.

vonLoudon10 May 2010 10:44 a.m. PST

Was "fun" in its time. But simpler is better. Seriously.

archstanton7310 May 2010 2:12 p.m. PST

Piquet FoB is a very simple but at the same time elegant system which takes into account command friction, differences in quality, ranges and terrain all through opposed dice rolls…

Highly recommended…

Thought this thread had petrified!

Royal Marine11 May 2010 1:46 a.m. PST

Are we 12 yet?

archstanton7311 May 2010 2:05 p.m. PST

Not quite!!!

Lest We Forget11 May 2010 9:32 p.m. PST

I still have an original copy of Empire III and Stars n Bars, so I'll have to skip the Telescoping Time Sale.

I did play a Johnny Reb ACW (3rd ed.) game a couple of weeks ago and we actually had fun. Had the host put on a Stars n Bars game I'd attend if there was free beer. The last game of Stars n Bars that I played in was amazing. The commander of a corps rolled bad for about eight hourly rounds and could not activate his force.

docdennis196812 May 2010 5:38 a.m. PST

No ruleset or senario should have a system where a player might be denied participation because of die rolls and such, even if the chances are fairly remote. It will happen from time to time and simply ruin a game, for no good reason except extreme bad luck. It is a "cutesy pie" idea that has no merit, no real gaming upside, only detrimental results! Can't these rules writers just let the players make their own mistakes? They will!! I have!!!

Pictors Studio13 May 2010 9:45 a.m. PST

Man, how have I missed out on posting on this thread recently. I had no idea it was still going on.

Kaoschallenged13 May 2010 5:25 p.m. PST

Amazing isn't it? Robert

AppleMak13 May 2010 11:25 p.m. PST

Just picked up a copy of "couldn't hit an elephant". Looks interesting. Anyone actually tried out the games "live"?

Saxondog15 May 2010 10:27 a.m. PST

Hitting an elephant? No, never tried that. Empire include stats for elephants? I think it included modifiers for button color.

Andrew May115 May 2010 2:38 p.m. PST

I'll be the boot!

fuzzy bunny15 May 2010 2:57 p.m. PST

…first post on page 12. Amazing, simply amazing! Will

Royal Marine21 May 2010 12:25 p.m. PST

I missed it! Still there is page 13 …

Oldenbarnevelt21 May 2010 4:54 p.m. PST

I took Empire eliminated everything having to do with Napoleonic battle and wound up with a pretty nice set of rules for the Seven Years War. grin

Clay the Elitist21 May 2010 6:16 p.m. PST

Have you actually played Empire?

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP22 May 2010 6:49 a.m. PST

Yes, played Empire several times, once with Scott et al.

Royal Marine22 May 2010 9:52 p.m. PST

I played it. It was good on the surface, but as a Corps Commander I got frustrated having to worry about the placement of skirmish companies. It just seem to get too complex, but the reference material at the back was really good.

Talk about exhuming a horse so you can thrash it some more!

Besides, this won't be eligible for the "Most Hilarious Thread of the Year" poll if it's still ongoing, and I've got this one picked over Terry1956's masterpiece. laugh

docdennis196804 Dec 2010 6:56 a.m. PST

so what started all this in the first place? Anyone got a clue?……… Oh wait……… never mind……. Emily Littella good night!

trailape04 Dec 2010 7:03 a.m. PST

LMAO!!!
Freakin AWESOME!

"Besides, this won't be eligible for the "Most Hilarious Thread of the Year" poll if it's still ongoing, and I've got this one picked over Terry1956's masterpiece"

Terry1956's effort will take some beating,…
(but this one could do it)
Cheers

My troops are all mounted on Empire III, is II same? and while II may have to much detail, I've seen 1 + 20 w/ less and 1 more post to get to 13

Mithmee05 Dec 2010 6:35 p.m. PST

Oh goody this is back and it is time to get the popcorn and beer out again.

14Bore05 Dec 2010 6:56 p.m. PST

War Event needs to come back, but I'm thinking smoothbores and flints starting at 300 yds on a open feild, and close as you may, might be a better match.

Captain Crunch05 Dec 2010 10:28 p.m. PST

I remember having quite a few laughs at this thread and for some reason I found War Event's name change to Garbage Hunter quite catchy. I don't recall reading Terry1956's posts and don't know how to find them. Could someone put up a link?

Maxshadow06 Dec 2010 5:59 a.m. PST

The Terry link.

woundedknee06 Dec 2010 6:56 a.m. PST

Thanks for the Terry link. Gets my vote for funniest thread of the year despite the commendable efforts of Greg/ Garbage Buster. Anyone who hasn't seen it should sit back and enjoy.

Royal Marine14 Dec 2010 4:33 p.m. PST

Do you think we could make it to 1000 posts?

Isn't this just a great hobby? … and I don't just mean wargaming. Who mentioned beer and popcorn for the spectators?

14Bore14 Dec 2010 4:51 p.m. PST

I'm working on how to play Empire III solo. Had the rules out last night reveiwing and thinking of a few tweeks

Maxshadow15 Dec 2010 4:14 a.m. PST

vonLoudon07 Jan 2011 5:47 a.m. PST

Happy New Year to All. Hope you have slept it off by now!

Royal Marine07 Jan 2011 1:41 p.m. PST

Did you mean "slept off Empire" or "slept off New Year"?

Florida Tory07 Jan 2011 2:28 p.m. PST

As yes, the Terry post comes back to me now. He was the guy who didn't like playing LaSalle because it had a ruleset, which he hadn't and didn't want to read. Hilarious post really, and it gets my vote for most hilarious.
