Hello Everyone!

I'm looking at building a Roman Legion for the mid 1st Century AD era.

Right now I'm thinking of going with Foundry (hate the price though).

I've also been looking at the Warlords plastic but have hear that the scales within the range are weird.

Are there any other 28mm EIR ranges you all would suggest I look at? I would prefer metal but will look at plastics.

Thanks!

OldGlory25s.com

If you go to the Old Glory Web site, you can choose between the Old Glory range and the Crusader range. Both are metal.
The Crusader range should blend with the Foundry range, but at a much reduced cost.

Have a look at the Imago Militis range, sculpted by Richard Ansell to be compatible with the Perry figures.

Distributed by Northstar in the UK, and possibly available through Brigade in the US?

aecurtis Fezian03 Apr 2010 8:13 a.m. PST

Not sure if Brigade stocks IM now, but Lon got them for me from North Star when they first came out. There are also Gripping Beast and 1st Corps.

I wouldn't go by what I'd been "told". Look up comparisons of the Warlord plastics. To my eye, they are smaller than the Perry Foundry figures, but other people swear they're just the same.

For example:

The IM legionary on the left, and the GB legionary third from the left, were both designed to complement the Foundry range in size and style. Which looks better with the Warlord plastic? Yet when I hold them in my hand, the Warlord figures look more slender to me than Perry Foundry figures; you might get the same impression here:

So it really depends on *your* eye, not anyone else's. And you can certainly mix and match between ranges.

Oh, yes: you don't have to stick with the original Warlord plastic set (which was what originally turned me off). Take a look at these, which are the Veterans (with additional armor):

Or Phil Henry's Warlord Roman army:

You can see photos of his lovely units on his old blog:

So I wouldn't dismiss anything based on size comments without checking. Phil convinced me to try the Warlord artillery, and they look great with my mostly-Foundry, part-IM, part-GB, part-1st Corps EIR!

Thanks everyone!

I'm going to take some time and got through these sites and will probably have more questions.

Allen – thanks for the size link. Any idea where the foundry figures fit in? Acriter said that the Imago Militis rangewould be compatible with the Perry figures (Foundry EIR).

It looks like these figures are on the small size. I agree with you about the Warlord ones being a bit slender. The Foundry ones just look beefier.

The price it what gets me the most. I would go with OG but am not as impressed with their Romans for some reason. I'm looking at building an entire legion – 9 cohorts of 24 figs and 1 cohort of 30(?) + the cavalry and auxiliary. At the cost of the foundry figs that will be more than $1,000.00.

So, I guess I'm trying to find the figs that look as good as the Foundry ones but not as expensive.

Allen – its me again….

The last two links you gave to Phil's pics…do you know if those are all Warlord minis? I will try to contact him through his blog, but just in case I can't, would you be willing to pass me e-maill address on to him?

Here it is: correus @ yahoo dot com

Thanks!

Companion Miniatures did some Romans.

Black Tree Design but they have a lot of bad write ups on TMP for service.

Warlord Games has free world wide shipping for the month of April, for me in Canada a savings of 20%.

The second link in my first post, to TMPer LegatusHedlius's blog, shows a plastic Warlord legionary compared to a large Foundry (Steve Saleh sculpt, one-piece) figure, and to a smaller Foundry Perry figure. The IM legionaries I have are just a wee bit smaller than the Perry legionaries.

But again, that's one of the initial Warlord releases, and they look fine in a unit:

The Warlord Veterans:

…may give a more robust impression.

Phil is likely to drop by this thread, and can confirm, but I believe with a few exceptions, his Celts and Romans are all Warlord. He noted the Celt Boar Hunt and Druid figures, which are by Foundry. His Cheiroballistae models are, I believe, Old Glory models (I've just spent several minutes trying to find images of them, so thanks for asking!) with Foundry crews; and the Scorpiones next to them are Foundry, with the same Foundry crews. The larger model labeled "Scorpion!" farther down is by Warlord Games.

Personally I plough a lonely furrow at the big end of 28s, using the larger Saleh Foundry range and BTDs. This can be tricky because you have to use minis from different ranges to get the troops you need. Here's a size comparison shot of the 2 Foundry Ranges and the Black Trees:

Another thought might be the unfeasibly limited Crusader range mentioned above; the minis are nice and you could get them cheaply (although there is only one pose of legionary). They would mix in well with the larger ranges. Scott McPhee did a great job painting some:-

Hello everyone!

Almost all the figures in my EIR and British armies are Warlord – but I do mix in some (Perry) Foundry. Warlord are a bit short of Celtic Carynx blowers and standard bearers, and Roman 'high command' – I also prefer the Foundry scorpiones (with some slight modifications), and I use their crew figures (as I've paid for them!).

The Foundry Romans do look a bit 'chunkier' – until both are painted, and then the differences seem to disappear (to me at least!).

The Perry Foundry Celts are smaller than the Warlord ones, but I just bung a piece of 1mm (0.040") plasticard under the bases and hide it with plenty of grass and rocks – I never notice the dfference – but then, perhaps, I am less fussy about size than some – I worry more about whether the faces look human and whether the figures are reasonably in proportion and similarly detailed than about sheer size, as people vary in size a lot.

Cheers,
Phil

If I was getting another Roman Legion IMHO would buy O.G. second century EIR! They are a very decent figure and there siege equipment wirh the EIR crew are great!! The only thing that I do not like is the centurions and other command! I would use other manufactures IMHO Mike Adams

These, Mike?

I've been trying to show Correus *pretty* pictures!

Lots of great info!! Thanks guys.

I'm a HUGE fan of O.G. minis but for some reason (not sure why) I just do not like any of the Ancients minis. I know, it makes makes no sense does it.

I went digging through my bits box yesterday looking for a couple of Warlord Roman samples that were sent to me. I had one plastic legionary and one of the metal centurions. I was amazed at the size difference between the two! The plastic one looked nice and proportional but then looked puny next to the centurion.

Phil – I got your e-mail (thanks!) and will be contacting you within a few days; I want to read more through your blog first.

Allen, yes those are the ones! Mike P.S. Corrues here is a picture that Allen shows on top of the Romans that I was talking about!

Imago militis are great but smaler than the EIR foundry even with the same shield.
