Cassell's Battlefields of Britain and Ireland by Richard Brooks, Weidenfeld & Nicholson, 2005

Depends what you mean by 'covering' and 'minor' ;-)

The British Civil Wars website here – british-civil-wars.co.uk is certainly worth a look.

I've not seen the Cassells' book yet, what level of detail does it go into Mike?

Another quite good general multiperiod one is 'English Battlefields' by Michael Rayner.

The Cromwellian Gazeteer by Peter Gaunt is a good place to find really obscure sieges etc.

I'd certainly recommend Stuart Reid's 'All the King's Armies' and Malcolm Wanklyn's recent works as ECW military histories.

Oh and if you're looking for scenarios, ECW Wargames Scenarios vols 1-4 from Caliver Books should keep you busy.

Sheesh … that's some request: I recently found a small battle and I've studied the "ECW" for 35+ years.

For wargaming Timbo W states it well.4

What is the small battle?

I suspect there are quite a few "undiscovered" minor battles, or battles where info is so sparse that it's difficult to know if there really was any such battle, e.g. my little account of Tankersley Moor.

Nice WI magazine article too Major W!

Did anything turn up afterwards on a clear date for the battle at Tankersley or more information on the forces involved?

Rather OT, but one thing which worries/interests me are some of the skirmishes/battles with surviving information only from one side. Hutton showed that roundhead news-sheets completely fabricated a battle at Tewkesbury in 1642.

Allegedly there was a skirmish at King's Norton (Birmingham) between Willoughby's and Rupert's horse prior to Edgehill. Tricky to say if a) it's an honest account of Parlt victory- and likely the Royalists would rather ignore the whole thing, b) it's hyped up into a victory whereas really a very minor brief fracas, c) totally made up !

Pamphleteers were truly the spiritual forefathers of the tabloid press ;-)

Calling Major Wittering…

Can you point me towards a current link to your account of Tankersley? My project for 2015 will be the ECW, and having just moved to Penistone (yes, I've heard all the jokes), sounds like a good starting point!
