Dear Chuvak
I am looking for a good illustrated books on the Russian Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery. Have you any suggestions?

Stephen

Dear Dr. Summerfield,

This series is nice for Army infantry, and not hard to find, and has modern and clear text:

ISBN 5150005088

For the Guard, cavalry and artillery – nothing similar leaps to mind, but perhaps our "Big Al" will have a suggestion. If not, I will "look around" a bit and see if there is somethign that fits your request.

With kind regards,
Chuvak

Chuvak – Not hard to find? I picked up volumes 2 and 3 years ago, but have never been able to lay my hands on a volume 1. Do you know of a source?

Chuvak18 Mar 2010 7:33 a.m. PST

Cher Vendome,

If you do a google search on the title, you will see many places to buy a download (also maybe some to steal a download).

Or is it a hard copy that you would have ?

One could also contact Илья Эристович directly. This is him :

If he provides you with a copy or a scan, it would be the only assurance that he and the other authors got any of the money from your purchase.

I did the web search you suggested and have to admit I am not very comfortable with the reliability of the sites that came up – escort ads, pop-up porn, one link to a site that had a message that the site provider had been shut down by police action for legal violations (like maybe providing unauthorized pdfs of books?). Unless you know of a specific reliable web source, I may try contacting Ulyanov directly.

I would prefer a hard copy, but am happy with what I can get.

BTW, if anyone (like maybe Stephen?) is interested in print copies of volumes 2 and 3, they are available for a reasonable price from Panorama of Russia (www.panrus.com). I've bought books from them before.

Vendome,

Is there an email address at which I might contact you?

Chuey

P.S. – Try a Mac or Linux OS with Firefox browser and Ad-Block (subscribe to Russian block-list) : most of those sites then render quite cleanly.
May work with Win+Firefox also, I don't know.
Russian internet is very ugly without Ad-Block.
Also, some sites are "domestic only" to reduce bandwidth and server loading, so you might need to find a Russian proxy server if you are not a "local".
:-)

Dear Vendome and Chuvak
Thank you for that. I will consider purchasing from them in the US but the postage rates are almost the same as the book to the UK. Do you know where I could purchase from Europe which should have lower postage rates. Thanks.

I have found a few books that look interesting. I am currently writing a book on the Russian Artillery to go with the two books on Cossacks and Opolchenie. No doubt in time I will complete the series with the Cavalry and Infantry. Advice and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks Chuvak, but I did make another try, this time with all security, blockers, etc. turned to full. Found a site that seemed less sketchy than some of the others, successfully downloaded a pdf of vol 1.

Thanks for the tip!
