Hello, long time away but to my ignorant eye there appears to be no real physical difference between the two wikki was as usual less than infarmative.

Could I run a MK IV as a V obviously not the MKIV that was extended to take the HMG teams?

Depends how fussy you are, the Mark V has a different superstructure, but I use them interchangeably.

The infantry carrier was the Mark V*, a Mark V sawn in half and extended 6' (the first few anyway).

They are different. The most noticeable difference is that the Mark V has a second little raised cabin-type thing with viewing ports at the rear as well as the driver's one at the front (sorry, don't know the correct name for this feature).

The Mark IV doesn't have this. Whether to use one as the other is entirely your call, they do after all look very similar.

The Mark V also has prominent engine grills at the rear sides. I wouldn't worry about the differences on the wargames table. Mk IVs are available in 20mm, both can be had in 15mm (QRF do the Mk V, Peter Pig, Irregular and Minifigs all do Mk Vs) and 1:300 (Scotia).

Personally I think the devil is in the details, and there is enough difference between the two to justify either a separate model, or a configurable model with different parts to customise it to taste.

Of course if a Panther is just a Panther, and you are not interested in the variant, or a Sherman just a Sherman and ditto, then by all means substitute one for to represent any of the variants. YMMV
