for written ones had to be the Dark Sun setting.

films it had to be Soldier with Kurt russel and the world the colonists were trying to make work. Not sure it was 100% dessert, but it was certainly barren.

M6-117 in Pitch Black, interesting fauna!

Dune is the ultimate desert planet. There's an entire series of mediocre (at best) novels named after it.

Dune

I agree on Dark Sun… quite deadly!

For film… either Dune or Tattooine..

vojvoda16 Mar 2010 4:10 a.m. PST

Dune, great fishing worms. Tattooine, sunsets have great music.

What, like rock cake or the realm of flapjack ?

Another fan of Athas from Dark Sun, but before they re-set the campaign world. It was TSR's first campaign setting that was fresh and original. I loved it and still do.

Next are Tattooine and Arrakis. Tattooine because it's got two suns and it was the first sci-fi/fantasy movie that really hooked me on the genre. Dune, because giant worms that will eat you unless you stay on solid rock is just cool.

Dune
Tatooine

and what else but…

MARS!!!

Whether Barsoom, Space 1889, Chronicles, Red Mars or whatever, it's the Grandaddy of all desert planets in Sci Fi, and it's still the best.

Thomas Whitten16 Mar 2010 6:13 a.m. PST

Yep Mars.

Being the Post Apoco fan that I am, my favorite desert planet has to be Earth after the bombs have gone off.

Smokey Roan16 Mar 2010 6:33 a.m. PST

Tatooine is above all else.

(though the recent shortsighted decision to end the Star Wars figures range may sour me on all things Star Wars gaming?)

Why is Hoth not listed, technically it is a desert. A frozen one, but Antarctica is considered a desert.
And from all human appearances Z'Ha'Dum looks like a desert as well.

Simcoe 200016 Mar 2010 2:57 p.m. PST

Barsoom, there is no "Mars"!
Dune, all honor to Paul Muab Dib!
And Tatooine! Where else would you find a more wretched hive of scum and villiany?

Lord Hypnogogue16 Mar 2010 4:22 p.m. PST

Arrakis.

I plan I sticking around here and see if we don't turn earth into a desert

Terra Nova is considered an arid planet, where deserts replace oceans (ok, so underground streams really replace oceans, but still…) and every native creature wants to kill you.

vojvoda16 Mar 2010 6:57 p.m. PST

Texas is not a planet it is it's own universe. Mars is an angry red plant and not desert material.

It's an ugly planet; a Bug planet. A planet hostile to life as we know it.

I like the one described in CJ Cherryh's The Faded Sun series the best along with the Dune series.

I forgot the desert planet in Galaxy Quest (Goblin Valley, Utah)!

Ah you're right Jakar, I forgot about Terra Nova from Heavy Gear. And it's not on that list either.

I wonder if these heads might work for a sand dwelling creature:
