I've found Rod Langton's book at his site. And perhaps it's worth ten pounds to see his step-by-step, with diagrams, etc. If anyone has bought and used it, I'd love to get some feedback. Also, I'd like to know if there are any other websites, etc out there that cover this topic for free, a download, etc. My specific situation is I'm ordering 1:700 Skytrex ships for the Napoleonic period, two US, two British and one French Frigate, and of course an East Indiaman. I plan to use them for Heart of Oak or some other ship-to-ship set. Thanks in advance, these will be my first ship models of this type, and any guidance would be appreciated. |

Although the Langton book is excellent, it is for 1:1200 vessels and probably would not look as good with the larger scale. I follow and do all the rigging in the bool and the one Langton picture on my site ucs.mun.ca/~tmarshal/aos is rigged as per the book as are these two whcih were entered in a TMP competition some years ago: TMP link I don't know if this would be too sparse for the larger scale. It is very much worth the price for 1:1200 and at that scale, you'd be mad not to but it. -- Tim |

I think Langton book and style would look fine on the 1:700. I often think the models can look over rigged. For example the ratlines were quite thin natural hemp rope and I think the shrouds look better without them. Of course YMMV and most will disagree with me but I base my observation on the impression of HMS Victory at a distance. You see shrouds but not ratlines. Ditto much of the running rigging. Now somewhere on the interweb there is a rigging guide that explains this approach and its a free download but I can't find it atm! Perhaps somebody knows it and can provide a link. |

I'd say that it is worth it. I used it to rig 1/600 Hartford, Alabama, and Kearsarge, and they look great! One definite change, though – the Langton guide uses cut mesh for ratlines. You can get Atlantic photo-etched ratlines in 1/600-1/700 from White Ensign Models. Although they are specifically designed for pre-dreadnoughts, I doubt that anyone will know the difference. link You have to hunt for them, but here they are: Online Catalogue > Complete catalogue > Ships (and aircraft smaller than 1/192 scale) > Other Products > Accessories > Photo-etch > 1/600 Scale > Atlantic Models Worth every penny. |

Kai That's the one I was thinking of. |

So my Skytrex Meridian 1:700 ships arrived yesterday
and they came with a lengthy assembly and rigging guide! And here I was worried about getting them together. I haven't had a chance to read them yet, but they look pretty detailed and have plenty of diagrams. |
