The Peninsula Army List calls for a large battalion of riflemen. Should all six bases contain 8 men as in a regular unit or should I mount them more dispersed say 4 to a base?

From a game play perspective it does not matter. So it is an aesthetic choice.

I'd base them in 8s otherwise they'll look like a skirmish screen and not an actual unit.

Yep, It doesn't look like Napoleonics (or other H&M war) if they're not shoulder to shoulder. Skirmishers get spread out, not line troops.

Yes, the large battalion represents them formed up and fighting like line troops.

Personally I take a small liberty with rifle bases though. I game 25mm and usually mount 8 foot figs to a 60 x 40 base. However I base rifle figures individually on 20 x 20 bases so I can also play skirmish games like Sharpe Practice, and then attach then to a magnetic sabot for LaSalle. So they are 6 to a base while most other foot are 8. But that's close enough for me.

At Sam's suggestion I based 3-5 riflemen to each regular base (40mm x 30mm in 15mm scale). Looks about right.

Not to be confused with an Irregular unit, I presume?

I think when I get around to doing Peninsular British for "Lasalle" (criminy, this will be the fourth time…), I'll get more of the British Rifles marching from Mark at Scale Creep (I already have some for South America), and do one large battalion just as normal infantry for when formed, and then skirmishing figures for when a portion on the entire battalion is broken down. Actually the old Battle Honours I have will do fine for the latter, when remounted.

An extra 48 15mm figures won't break the bank (whimper…).

Hi
For the 95th and 60/5th I base 5 or 6 figures to a base; (40mm x 30mm in 15mm scale). Same same for my Cacadores. Looks about right.
Cheers

Kaboom.

Like John and trailape, I also based my rifles in irregular formation, in my case 5 figures per stand. I'll use them to represent both regular and irregular formation. There's a picture here-

Maybe someday I'll do another unit in regular formation as well, though probably not. I like the look. I'll do the same setup for the cazadores as well.
