I am about to start doing my first command bases (Brigade and above) and was wondering if commders had someone carrying a flag nearby during battle. Was this the same for all nations or not? THX, Burkhard |

Units have flags, not officers. This wasn't the middle ages |

You might get the occassional presentation of a captured enemy flag to a commander during a battle (probably more fanciful than real) could make for a nice vignette. |

An ADC is a more appropriate addition to a command base. |

Well, actually, to be fair the Army of the Potomac had a pretty detailed system of flags for headquarters at the level of division and above |

I wasn't aware that the Army of the Potomac attended Napoleon's wars

Connard – now this is what you get for not paying attention! My bad, had just looked at an ACW question and thought this was still the ACW board! In that case, no flags – but an ADC or escort is a good idea |

THX guys, about what suspected from looking at comtmeporary paintings. Funny thing is that the ACW came up here. Having been a ACW player for some time it felt strange to me commanders would have flags up to the middel ages and then again in the ACW but none in between. But alas
that is history! THX, Burkhard |

I have all sorts of stuff on my command bases, from damaged guns, Enthusiastic Infantrymen, to Bands, to ADCs and Captured Colours being presented. I even have some cheering civilians around one Spanish general of mine,.. Just takes a bit of creativity I think. |

"Units have flags, not officers". Well, not totally correct, there are such things as "Personal Standards"; (though these wouldn't be taken on campaign I suspect). |
