Follows an officer's search of the last resting place of his unit following his re-awakening in hospital and their disapperance. Very good period flavour and some brutal battle scenes – both street-fighting at the outset and then around a defended river crossing, on which the main story is centred. |

Good film. Got it on Blu-Ray for my birthday last year. I enjoyed it very much, more so than "Brotherhood" (though I did like that too). Trailer: YouTube link |

I'll keep an eye out for it. Looks awesome. It's getting far easier to get hold of foriegn films nowerdays and the technology is getting cheaper we don't have to put up with old rubbish. |

Based on a true story too. According to the blurb on the DVD case, the Sunday Times called it "One of the great war movies"; "The most impressive war film since Saving Private Ryan" and "Epic, powerful, unforgettable". Only seen it the once, but it was certainly gripping stuff. Mostly infrantry combat, some vs. tanks too. Highly recommended. |

I came to see the war porn, but I stayed for the moving human story. |

I liked "Brotherhood". I believe I'll have to hunt this one down. Cheers for the heads up. |

I liked Brotherhood too, but it had the same minor weakness that even movies like Avatar or Star Wars-Clone Wars had: the assumption that modern, or future war, involves men in close formation moving together across open ground. Which hasn't been effective since the 1800s. |

Thanks – there is not too much out there on the Chinese Civil War! |

Lately I have seen a few excellent foreign actioners. I can't recall the title, but a movie about Polish peacekeepers in Bosnia that are being hunted down by militia, the Brazilian flick "Elite Squad" about BOPE police special forces against drug cartels in the slums of Rio. Also the Argentine movie 'Blessed by Fire' about the hapless Argentine army in the Falklands War has a confusing night time battle scene. I think it might be Goose Green. |

Which hasn't been effective since the 1800s. As the many instances of commanders using the same tactics since then have shown- rather unfortunately for those taking part. |

Cracking movie, good action scenes, but the movie and characters are good too. The relationship between the veteran and his senior but younger commander is very good as the years go by. I recorded a copy off Sky-Inde months ago. |

There was a boom in Chinese Civil War movies when I was in Hong Kong and Shanghai last year. Assembly is one of the better ones, though the second half of the movie is completely different to the first but as noted still an engaging enough story. Most of the films are either action rubbish or they use the civil war as the back drop for a love story. To be honest the vast bulk are rubbish by western standards. |

There are a lot of Chinese Civil War movies out there. In San Francisco Chinatown I saw at least a dozen or so. Unfortunately no English or subtitles. |
