Hi
What is the thing that looks like a short barrelled gun or mortar on the CS9? all the details I can find say it is just armed with a Bren/Vickers and a BOYS AT

Thanks

That would be the water jacket of the Vickers.

Ah: I bet you're talking about BEF Miniatures' model, or something similar, such as this:

Look also at the second photo here:

Appears to be a smoke discharger.

Without a picture it's hard to be sure but if gun barrel you are seeing is the barrel between the Bren and BOYS from pictures like these:

Then Allen is correct it is a 4 inch Smoke Discharger.

Nicely done, Jimmy 214! I was still looking for confirmation.

Could it possibly be a 3.7" howitzer like the ones on the CS (close support) versions of the early cruiser tanks? If so, this could fire smoke, and HE shells too

as opposed to the dedicated smoke dischargers found on tanks and carriers such as the one at the bottom of the page here: link

Probably not, as that was a much more complex weapon, as shown here on an A9 Cruiser:

Knew I could count on you guys … thanks smoke discharger it is then :)

Thanks Allen but I think you nailed it first. I just had the links because I asked the same question recently and someone helpfully pointed me in the right direction. Too much time around AML-60 armoured cars made me think mortar or gun rather then the more logical smoke discharger too.

I've always wanted an AML-60 for freeway driving!

Yes, it is a 4 inch smoke discharger.
