I'd like to see a poll on favorite basing material.

(1) Sheet Metal
(2) Plastic Slotted Base
(3) Balsawood
(4) MDF

Any others?

Best,
Steve

At one time or another, I've used all the materials so
far listed.

For the last couple of years, I'm using sheet metal and
thin plywood, for different reasons. The sheet metal
I'm using for 28mm ACW, along with mag inserts for the
carry boxes.

The thin plywood I'm using for 28/30mm Napoleonics, with
the 'paper steel' underlay.

Pulp/Skirmish, I use mostly sheet metal 1" squares, but
also scrap bases from kits for figures with oddly shaped
bases.

Fender Washers for individual figures and either thin cardboard or sheet metal for multi-figure stands.

1.5mm plywood…no point in bothering with anything else

Good luck with consensus on material usage…looks to be a loooooong list.

Iron 20mm washers, plastic poker chips and styrene sheet.

Henrix10 Mar 2010 9:53 a.m. PST

Washers, 0.8 mm plywood (from Litko), or plasticard, in order of preference, depending on the figure and game.

Premade magnetic bases, from Gale Force Nine.

Sculpted resin 30mm display bases.

AppleMak11 Mar 2010 4:59 a.m. PST

Depends on scale. For my 6mm Naps I use thin Litko bases with magnetic sheet added. For 28mm ECW they are mounted on largish (18cm x 6 cm) Dayler boards – a board with a faux canvas backing as used by artists.

Rich Knapton13 Mar 2010 11:50 a.m. PST

Balsa wood because it's so easy. Seal the top and it lasts for years. I have some bases that go back 35 years and the balsa is just as fresh as my new ones.
