We played a larger game today with "It is Warm Work" and it went very well. We were even able to concentrate with a house full of kids. link |

I'm a bit confused re: FLOB, are there two rulesets with the same name? The review mentioned in an earlier post by Steffan O'Sullivan credits the author/s as Harrison and Peck yet I have just bought a set FLOB which are by David Manley.Reading Steffans review and comparing (briefly) the set I have they do seem to be the same. Help! Jack. |

Im getting to be a Heart of Oak fan but needs a lerge area to play. I drop off the crew allocation rules to make things move a little quicker. Trafalgar smaller area 4x4 and not as detailed easier to play. All dpends on what you want or what mood you are in. M |

So far here are my favorite rules not necessarily in this order: Heart of Oak Its Warm Work Kiss Me Hardy I just figured out there is a new yahoo group for Its War Work. I hope it gets going. Is this your group Morning Scout? link |
Morning Scout | 27 Nov 2010 12:33 p.m. PST |
It is my group. I set it up a while back, but never got around to putting it into action. I know some have questions and input, so go at it. The rules work well, but new ideas are always welcome. |

I have been studying "Hearts of Oak" and looking at some of the other free rules. Honestly, I don't see that much difference in details between them. Whether you use the 6, 8, 12 or 17 point compass and wind doesn't add that much difference. They all wind up looking at some sort of a table or card to figure out the allowed movement. If you download the "Hearts of Oak" rules and copy the sailing chart to each ship card, you save looking up that table all the time. They all seem to have "rosters" for crew, hull and firing. Almost all keep some track of the conditions of the masks. In terms of playing speed I see several styles being used and they have different speeds of play. One type of system is to roll for initiative (or pick cards for initiative) and then move ONE ship at at time.
.so you wait for the moving player to decide what to do and then to move
. and then on to the next player? Another type of system is the "I go, then You go" system where at least each side is moving their entire fleet at one time. Another type of system is the written orders (you still have to think- maybe a bit more, and do have to write) but then both sides move at the same time. Why isn't this a faster method? |

I would like a set that does one ship against one ship with boarding actions. Something for good skirmishes with my 25mm ships. I use trafalgar for bigger actions. I thought about Legends of the high seas, but do not have it yet. |

Hey bills fan, You could always make a set of order cards
since really you would only need a handful per ship. For example: a Turn to port, a turn to Starboard, Heave to, back sail, Tack, Wear, drop anchor, weigh anchor, raise sail, take in sail. I have done this for HoO, it went very quick
we NEVER wrote rules down
and with my current rule set I don't either. I also only play "we-go" rules, where all ships move at the same time, and the damage also is done at the same time. I also use a 22.5 degree turning point, as my game compass
I have used a 11.25 degree turning point, and found it just as easy to work with. just thought I would chime in. -kev |
