Are there any good english-language books on the Mexican Adventure? I did a quick search on Amazon and only found an osprey…anything else? Thanks!

The Osprey is pretty good

With Maximilian in Mexico: A Lady's Experience of the French Adventure is a period account of the Adventure written by an American in Mexico at the time

The Company of Military Historians has some of this in their book on US military uniforms

Look up "Maximilian And Juarez" by Jaspar Ridley, and/or "The Crown of Mexico" by Joan Haslip for two popular histories.

Both should be available through Amazon, Alibris, or AbeBooks, and probably very inexpensively.

The real story is far better than any fiction of almost any kind. Only the real world can be as bizarre as the history of the French Intervention, and must be read to be believed.

Oh, and for a great good "watch," rent or catch on TCM "Juarez" with Paul Muni, Bette Davis, Brian Aherne (as "Maxel"), and a perfectly oily Claude Raines as Nappy III himself. Some hokiness, and short-cuts, but more accurate than not, and a great mood maker.

Major Dundee always good value

The Last Prince of the Mexican Empire (Hardcover)
by C. M. Mayo and SHELBY'S EXPEDITION TO MEXICO: AN UNWRITTEN LEAF OF THE WAR (Civil War in the West) (Hardcover)by JOHN EDWARDS is a decent read – one more obscure fictional book The Lost Cause: The Confederate Exodus to Mexico (Paperback) Andrew F. Rolleis is also fun!
