Thinking about kit-bashing some modern plastic vehicles for use with ~28mm sci-fi figures (ie GW Imperial Guard figures).

Based on some quick research it appears that 1/48 is the correct scale but there are very few kits available. 1/35 seems too large but there's a ton of stuff out there.

Suggestions? Personal experience?

You should be able to find some workable stuff in 1/35 – just look for kits of the smaller vehicles out there.

i use 1/48 and while there is les sof it its certainly not rare or difficult to find, I agree you wont get much obscure stuff though.

However if you want horribly oversized GW 40k-ish style stuff then you probably want 1/35 anyway.

Since there is no consistent scale on GW minis (the heads and hands are about 1/35, the weapons nearly 1/25, the torsos 1/48 and the legs and arms 1/55)
1/35 is no problem but yours and your fellow gamers taste.

The GW Rhino is about the same size as a 1/35 M-113 APC, and the Land Raider is about the same as a 1/35 M-1 Abrams (I've built all of those) so yeah, they should go well together.

Get a 1/35 German Maus, or the E-100 tank. Both are dimensionally bigger than the M-1, and so will look really impressive with your IG army.

Thanks Taskforce! Perfect way of explaining the issue. If a 1/35 M1 Abrams is about the same as the Land Raider then other vehicles should work just fine.

Re: GW figures being out of scale, yup, very true. I don't play the 40K rules and use figures and vehicles from many different manufacturers (GW, Pig Iron, AT-43, etc.).

So as long as everything sort of looks good that's all I worry about. Below is a link to a game I played with one of my sons. We used 40K Cadians (invaders) and Tallarns (defenders) to represent opposing sides. I also re-painted AT-43 mechs and modified the AT-43 Firetoad's weapons mounting.

So we're definitely heretics when it comes to gaming! :-)

I've found that if you swap out things that suggest the scale of the 1/35th scale model kit, such as hatches, pintel mounted guns, and field gear with the appropriate 28mm or 1/48th scale parts you can 're-scale' the kit. Also adding enough bitz to the vehicle to make it look less recognizable helps.

Look for the GW armor accessories sprue, it has lots of hatch parts.

I've experimented with 1/35 scale vehicles. As relates to 40k, anything larger than a M113 is too big to be an IG vehicle. If you're not using 40k vehicles, then either 1/48 or 1/35 will be fine. I originally used a M3 Bradley as a 40k Razorback. It was far too large to be a proper razorback, but looked great!

The pics in the link aren't great for comparison, but here's my 1/35 scale M113 as scavenger vehicle with a 28mm EM4 figure..

A 1/35 M109A6 Paladin self-propelled howitzer makes a great stand-in Basilisk. Almost exactly the same size on the table. Use the Italeri kit, it's only about $20. USD

Several years ago, when I was playing 40K, I got a DML German E-100 kit and kit-bashed it with parts from a Leman Russ and a Land Raider. It made an excellent superheavy IG tank.
