As the consensus seems to be that Ghilman cavalry were primarily armoured horse archers, with mace, sword or axe for secondary armament does anyone know of suitable figures? Most seem to be lance armed – the only ones I've found with bows are Gripping Beast Seljuk Turk horse archers and they don't have the typical appearance of Ghilman.

Light lances were also used, however, they were indeed primarily armoured horse archers.

Quite so and while I don't mind mixing in the odd lance armed figure I would like some firing bows. So any suggestions?

Essex Islamic Persians are nice; here are some of mine:

Others have also recently commented on them on TMP (can't find the exact postings, though). Some of the guys with bows might fit as Ghulams? I'm using them for Sasanians, but you could probably morph them in another direction.

Thanks they look fine. Certainly more the part than the Gripping Beast Seljuk Turks.

Any other suggestions welcome.

The Essex 28mm Islamic Persians are very nice, although I have mixed feelings about the horses.

But they seem to have disappeared from the Essex web site some time ago. I wonder if they are still available?

Essex has so many nice figures and a lot of overlap between ranges.

I feel the same way about the donkeys – I mean horses.
