An Ork force has been slowly gathering strength on my painting table. So far I haven't too much stuff done, there were other projects that had a higher priority. One of the things that was holding me back, I think, was the killa kan situation. I wanted to have a bunch of them but didn't really want to have that much metal in a box, they looked like pretty fragile models and I hate putting stuff like that back together.

But with plastic ones and a deff dred too that problem is gone. Looks like I'll be picking up a 40K basic set and starting to paint my ork force up with some more verve now.

I really like the new Killa Kans and at $15.00 USD a piece not all that expensive for GW either. Might have to pick some up.

I wonder if the $15 USD kans are a splash release special like (for ex) the Eldar War Walkers were? If so, they're 3 for the (eventual) price of 2, and something to get in quantity while the getting is good.

$15 USD per kan isnt too bad, but $50 USD for each individual dred!?! that is ridiculous. it is a nice model, but it is things like that that make me glad i got out and will keep me from coming back.

but they are -gorgeous- models

Actually, while the GW vehicle models aren't cheap, they are comparable in price with historical tank kits (which have gone up a lot since I was a kid!).

Cut off some of the more orkish symbols and those Kans would make some nice ramshackle mining equipment for many sci-fi or post apoc. setting.

The kans look nice. I dont like that theres only one of each weapon in the box. Makes it more difficult to have your models armed the same way.

I like the new Killa Kans, but the new Dred for some reason isn't doing it for me as much as the old metal one did.

I agree with Deathwing.

price of historical kits is up but the have a higher parts count and many are now mixed media ( resin, etched , turn barrels) .

I think the Killa Kans are the best item in this latest batch of previews. I'd certainly like to pick up a box of them.

I like the Deff Dread, but I don't know if I would actually pay that much for the kit. It's much like the Empire Steam Tank for Warhammer Fantasy; I'd like to have one but every time I look at the price tag I turn away.

Doesn't look like it – the pictures on the GW site show three parts of the same frame so they'd have to re-tool it to make them separate models.

Are you sure about that? It looks like three separate frames to me, each with the right bits to build a single Kan. If so, GW could easily pull a repeat of the War Walker thing.

It looks like each frame only has one of the weapon options on it. It would be difficult to break it down to one figure per box.

I too love the Kans but don't care for the Dred but I can't really figure out why. Though I must admit that despite the awesomeness of the Kans its the new marine Venerable Dreadnought thats got me stoked ~ I've been waiting for a marine dread with a head and hand like that ever since the EPIC Stompas box came out in 1991.

"It looks like each frame only has one of the weapon options on it. It would be difficult to break it down to one figure per box."

I don't quite follow that, each sprue appears to have a complete kan with a gun and a ccw so the sprues could easily be sold individually with the box stating what weapons are in it so that people could only buy the weapons they want.

Earth to GW, the current CADUSD exchange rate is 1.065, not 1.189.

But does anyone in Canada actually buy GW at Canadian retail anymore? When you can get it to your door for 10% off UK MSRP or deal with thewarstore.com?

The disolving of GW Canada and the extension of GW US into GW North America was supposed to fix all this exchange rate gouging. I guess not though.

The kans are pretty cool. I like the dread as well, but not quite as much. I think that if I really wanted to make a dread, I'd get a kan box and combine them together.

Are you sure about that? It looks like three separate frames to me, each with the right bits to build a single Kan.

If you look at the sprue photos, they all have pieces sticking from the top or bottom (or both) of the frame. (The first picture only has two – I think whoever took the photo might have clipped one of them off.) These are the points at which the whole frame would have been connected when moulded, and where it will be bent/snapped by whoever packs it in a box.

Pretty much every GW kit of this sort of size is done like this. Moulding a complete kit in one shot is probably cheaper than running X of one frame plus Y of another and hoping that the numbers come out right at the end (after taking rejected frames into account, it's very possible they wouldn't tally), plus it's a lot quicker to pack something when it's one single piece of plastic + bases + leaflet than it is if you're pulling multiple sprues to pack each box, and you get fewer mispacked boxes as well.

"I don't quite follow that, each sprue appears to have a complete kan with a gun and a ccw so the sprues could easily be sold individually with the box stating what weapons are in it so that people could only buy the weapons they want."

That also means three boxes that GW has to produce and stores have to stock rather than one.
