I'll be in Toronto this weekend with the kids while my wife is meeting up with a friend of hers doing the "ladies day out". That gives the kids and I some time to kill. I've got free passes to one attraction, but am always up for a visit to a good game store. I'm looking for one that has at least a very good basic selection of WW2 minis in stock.

I'm looking to buy a few pieces of my first 28mm (?) Commonwealth, German and/or Yank infantry stuff relatively cheap (for my newly acquired NUTS! rules). Can anyone recommend a bricks and mortar store in Toronto for this?

Thanks.

P.S. I grew up in TO but moved away 15 years ago so know my way around but the newer stores, not so much.

I'm not sure if any store carries 28mm WWII in stock. 15mm (FoW) can be found easily enough but that's about it.

The one store that used to bring that stuff (mostly on order, not as shelf stock) has has gone downhill, massively, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone (if it's even open at any particular time, as I've heard it's more "appointment only" for times).

Even outside the city, not sure where to suggest for what you're after. Sorry.

Hornet Hobbies is a good shop for traditional plastic figures and model kits, but I don't think you'll find any 28mm minis there. Toronto is sadly a dead zone for historical minis as far as I know. If I am wrong I hope someone corrects me, since I visit often.

I've emailed Dueling GRounds, AGN Miniatures and Hornet Hobbies asking for help, thanks.

Army Group North does have a "good selection" of Bolt Action Miniatures and Crusader, both in 28mm in stock, for anyone interested. Vincent emailed me back within 15 minutes. I'm also trying to get in contact with Sentry Models on Bayview.

Dueling Grounds is one of my favorite shops, but they don't carry 'traditional' wargaming miniatures that you're after, just the FoW/Warmachine/Hordes/AT-43 lines. Most it's a CCG shop, with a selection of other popular stuff.

Glad to hear you might have some luck with AGNM (I didn't mention them earlier as they are not a brick and mortar shop).

Thanks, Vosper. I may have to go the mail order route. I hope to hear back from Vincent again at AGNM shortly (he's booked Saturday otherwise would've met up with the kids and I). Sentry on Bayview is gone out of business, anyone know? At least their website is gone.

FoW are smaller than what I'd want for NUTS skirmish stuff, right?

You might find something at Crossed Swords.

There's also North Star Hobbies in Mississauga 905-566-4758

Pretty sure Sentry is gone, I couldn't find it last time I was in TO walking on Bayview Ave.

DaveyJJ02 Feb 2010 10:06 a.m. PST

I'll check into Crossed Swords and North Star as well, thanks everyone. Sherry, from Hornet, just emailed and said they do have 1/72nd (28mm) and some larger WW2 in stock. My wife's getting dropped off only a few blocks from their store, so that's one to check.

DColtman02 Feb 2010 10:35 a.m. PST

They are real nice folks in there at Hornet. They also have an excellent selection of 1/72 die-casts.

DaveyJJ02 Feb 2010 12:10 p.m. PST

Yeah, found some. North Star can get the stuff in fast, but I'm still working on figuring out exactly what I'd like. Which means going out and actually window shopping first. Hornet (nice guy on the phone) has got "lots" of WW2 1/72 in Airfix, Italeri, Pegasus in stock. I'll head there to look.

Thanks again, everyone for helping (this old guy) out.

Maybe even some 1/32nd scale too? That'd work for NUTS!, right?

Vosper02 Feb 2010 8:39 p.m. PST

If you're looking for 1:72nd, 1:48th, or 1:35th armour, I will suggest Wheels and Wings – they have a vast selection, in spite of the name not being Armour-centric. wheelswingshobbies.com And, they have an even larger selection of aircraft (go figure ;)

FoW is 15mm, 1:72nd is 20mm, 1:48 is 28mm (near-enough), and 1:35 is 54mm (?) – any of them would work for NUTS, depending on what you already had.

Hope that helps.

North of Bloor and Jane, turning east/right onto Annette from Jane. It's just a minute or two down the street on the north side (left) of the street. There's a side road running north where you can park okay. I doubt there are any 28mm WW2 items there.

North Star Hobbies in Mississauga 905-566-4758

Just on the Mississauga side of the Etobicoke-Mississauga border just over the bridge and Mimico Creek on the south side of Dundas (that is, turning left). The parking lot entrance has a big plastic duck by it for the Muddy Duck restaurant. (Not recommended.)

If Vince arranges for you to pick anything up, we may meet.

That's me laughing my head off!
