Not sure how I missed that this had ever happened?

Interesting scenarios for Pulp, WW1 and interwar (and cold war)

Would've likely been like Jersey and Guernsey, I suspect.

I presume the Brits might not have bombed it that hard?

We'd have re-located criminals there rather than Australia, which turns out to be quite a nice place once you adjust to the wildlife trying to kill you on a daily basis. Big mistake that one. Should have left the scum here in the cold and re-located Blighty to sunnier climes ;-)

The exchange of Playmobiland was even more devastating.

Actually in WW2 I suspect that it might have brought Britain into a more direct confrontation with Hitler before Poland and perhaps hardened British views about Czechoslovakia.

In WW1 it creates a more interesting scenario for Naval games (noting that the Committee for Imperial Defence did consider a close blockade strategy of the North German Coast).

I quite like the idea of a hotbed of intrigue in the 1930's just off the German Coast and with Sea Route to Poland and the Soviet Union.

Zanzibar for Heligoland? That seemed a fair trade to someone?

Dr Mathias Fezian22 Jan 2010 2:03 p.m. PST

Regarding the Zanzibar swap- I doubt the countries involved in the Scramble for Africa knew exactly how bad of a hell-hole Africa really is. Plus Zanzibar was primarily the main staging point for anyone going into the interior on that side of Africa.

It didn't do a lot of box office.
