Sure no problem….
Although I must warn you that any unpainted casualty's will be so marked with a 2.5 POUND SINGLE JACK,(AKA SLEDGE HAMMER)!

Grunt186116 Jan 2010 11:38 p.m. PST

No not really. I would be more likely to loan my painted minis.

skinkmasterreturns16 Jan 2010 11:44 p.m. PST

Only when I used to play GW games….

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER16 Jan 2010 11:53 p.m. PST

Primed yes! Unpainted, maybe if it was a kid just starting out, otherwise no.

quidveritas17 Jan 2010 12:13 a.m. PST

I would be embarrassed to put unpainted figs on the table. I do have some terrain that could use some work but I almost never use that.

The way I look at it, if I spend tons of time on my figures and my table, at a minimum, unpainted figs just destroy what I was trying to accomplish.

I will admit I have played with folks that have unpainted lead -- never more than once. I let them know right up front how I feel about things. Half the time the stuff gets painted (I don't ask for much -- 3 colors and I'm happy). Half the time I never play with the individual who is so insulted that I would even broach the subject. I feel insulted that he showed up with unpainted lead.

This is one of the reasons I avoid FOW like the plague. IMO these guys are the worst offenders.

Maybe when Hell freezes over.

No never, not once in over thirty years gaming. I won't even play with figures that aren't based properly, and nor will any of my gaming mates.

chronoglide17 Jan 2010 2:53 a.m. PST

Absolutely 100% yes, and Bleeped text the lot of you….lol….failing that I'd paint them all silver……

SgtPain17 Jan 2010 5:54 a.m. PST

With the exception of a few 'toy solders game' using plastic 54mm toy armies in green and tan. Never, never, never.

Chocolate Fezian17 Jan 2010 6:29 a.m. PST

No, never.

I never have used unpainted metal minis….however I am seriously tempted to play with some unpainted 54mm plastics…

Steve Pugh17 Jan 2010 7:32 a.m. PST

Sure, why on earth not? Unpainted figures, cardboard counters, chess pawns, whatever's to hand.

I think the only games I've ever played where every miniature is fully painted have been at conventions.

Playing the game is playing the game. Painting the miniatures is painting the miniatures. Sometimes I want to do one, sometimes the other, and not always both for the same period, and not always in the same order.

Saxondog17 Jan 2010 8:09 a.m. PST

Nope. No game.

One exception. Someone brand new to the hobby might be excepted but every time they pull out the figures, there better be more painted then last time. And NO…spray paint does not count.

"The majority seem to be fine playing using unpainted stuff and I got to wondering if its the same here where there is a broader spread of gamers (both in types of game and age)…"

No, what an appalling thought. I wouldn't refuse to take part in a game because someone hadn't painted their figures though, that would be impolite.

I'd rather use counters than unpainted figures (and I have done just that on occasion).

eptingmike17 Jan 2010 9:12 a.m. PST

Yes. I want to paint, I want to game, but find that time is too short to get either done! I haven't found the time to uncap a jar of paint in at least 2 months. Depressing. If I waited to play until my various projects were painted well I might as well give up now!

Jakse37517 Jan 2010 9:15 a.m. PST

yes

I play at an American Legion and when people stop to look at the game they always ask do they come painted? then i can show them the stages of painting, i almost always have some units that are bare/primed/base coated. I can line them up and show them the stages of painting.

I enjoy painting, i love a painted army on the table, but i also want to play the game. It's kinda like fishing. I love hiking 10 miles up a stream with my fly rod and waders and hard fighting for a fish. Then again i love sitting on the end of the dock with a hook and worm a bottle of beer and just plucking up sunnies and perch.

So for all the unpainted haters out there just realize how many great games your missing cause something isn't dressed the way you like it.

When I first started plying Warmachine I won the prize for best painted army because I was the only one with a painted army!

Vis Bellica17 Jan 2010 12:55 p.m. PST

No: the aethetics of the game contribute to my enjoyment.

Judging from the responses on this thread (and remembering that nobody has said the figures have to be painted to some magnificent standard), it could also be said that the painted haters are missing many great games by not putting forth a minimal effort to get some paint on the figures.

Steve Pugh17 Jan 2010 1:13 p.m. PST

Have any of the people who say that they play with unpainted actually said that they hate painted miniatures?

The anger seems to be going one way only.

highlandcatfrog17 Jan 2010 1:31 p.m. PST

The anger seems to be going one way only.

What anger? Why is a different opinion automatically anger? If you'll read through all of the posts on this thread you'll see where the term "haters" started. It wasn't with the folks who want all of the figures on the table to have at least a minimal paint job.

Dashetal17 Jan 2010 2:55 p.m. PST

To be honest its never come up in conversation in our group. There are a lotta different periods being collected and each of us has figures for all the factions in the period we have collected and painted when we host the first games. No one has hosted a game where the figures were not painted so I dont know if anyone would object.

Our minor disagreements are usually over the introduction of new rules and how they compare to other rule sets the group has played.

What, like this guy? link

hurcheon17 Jan 2010 6:41 p.m. PST

Yes I have and will.

I'll try and get the stuff painted as soon as, but I won't sit painting and never playing. Otherwise I'd only play once every 5 years

Ditto Tango 2 117 Jan 2010 11:31 p.m. PST

For many of us, the hobby is playing with painted models and we have all the games we can manage thank you. We're not telling you how to play, just how we prefer to play, that's all. Just like we don't tell you how to filet your catch or how you cook it. It's personal preference and there's no need to get judgemental about others' preferences, especially those of us who host games at our homes.

Undressed figures should only be commanded by undressed gamers.

Syrinx018 Jan 2010 4:38 p.m. PST

Never completely unpainted. I have fielded some really basic paint jobs though while slowly painting my hoard armies. I was so tired of not fielding one group of figures I paid to have them painted.

I wouldn't refuse a game with a friend or new club member because of the lack of paint on their figures. I would point out often how great they would look painted. It's funny how taking pictures of the battles encourages painting as well.

The thought of undressed gamers… Shudder.

Pat Ripley Fezian18 Jan 2010 4:57 p.m. PST

there is a rule around here when you play pool. if you lose without puting a ball away its once around the table with your pants down. perhaps the same could be instated for wargamers?

Lentulus19 Jan 2010 2:25 p.m. PST

No.

I once used unpainted plastic 20mm men in space suits. About 35 years ago. I am still have nightmares about it.

grin

Seriously, not my troops ever but if someone else did I would not go into "off in a huff" mode.

Saxondog20 Jan 2010 10:37 p.m. PST

There was once a local store that allowed unpainted figures in the store games but they had morale penalties. Un-assembled not allowed. Un-painted -2 on all morale checks and primered only had a -1 penalty. Really funny to see space marines with worse morale then guard but at least they got to play with their un-painted figures.

Flat Beer and Cold Pizza21 Jan 2010 12:55 a.m. PST

Nope, can't do it. Saw this done once at a FoW meet and I was stupefied. Defeats the purpose, if you ask me.
