There is a big discussion going on on another forum (to do with 40k) whether its ok to use bare/primed figures/armies in games. The majority seem to be fine playing using unpainted stuff and I got to wondering if its the same here where there is a broader spread of gamers (both in types of game and age)
I personally wont use unpainted figures as I enjoy painting and I prefer to play against painted figures but wont refuse a game if the other persons stuff is unpainted. Mick |

Almost never. But then, we mainly play D&D and skirmish games. |

Absolute, irrevocable HERESY! I have been known to let other gamers use unpainted minis, maybe once or twice. If they don't have painted minis, I supply them with my "loaners". The point of mini gaming is aesthetics. How does a hunk of nekked metal or plastic fulfil aesthics?

If I were in a tournament and my opponent dumped unpainted figures on the table, I would forfeit. Good thing most tournaments award forfeit "victors" minimum points. |

I won't play with unpainted figures. How do you expect them to fight if you don't paint them? |

Nope. Play against them but don't field them that way. |
Lluis of Minairons | 16 Jan 2010 4:25 p.m. PST |
Usually not. I must admit to have been forced to fielding some unfinished unit lately, at playing FoW with my usual gaming mates (I'm carrying a WWII Red Army and am the only one in my circle at painting soviets!). However, no unit of mine is fielded twice unfinished. I never play tournaments, so no worries here. |

No,does not feel right. But I do like walls painted or wallpapered and floors covered by carpet or varnished
.The car seems more acceptable with paint on too
is that normal? |

Definately not! The downside of this is that I haven't played a game in ages because it takes me so long to paint! |

Nope, won't even bother. People who play with unpainted minis are reserved a special place in hell. If they are THAT lazy then they should play a card game. |

Nope, nope, nope. And I'm shocked, SHOCKED I TELLZ YA! when I see GW "Chapter Approved" tournaments with unpainted stuff on the table. I see it all the time in the NW Ohio area

Well, in 30 years of gaming I did use an unpainted mini once, and felt deeply chagrined about it. |

It's their game. They can play it any way they want. Bare metal, bare players--it's all good. :-) Pav, I hope you don't mean CCG card games. Today, I put in more hours getting CCG decks ready than a miniature game ready! Lazy? Pha! |
rddfxx | 16 Jan 2010 5:56 p.m. PST |
Yes! Although more often than not it's figures with unfinished paint jobs rather than bare metal. I always base my figures first, before priming and painting. Once they're painted, they are painted to a high standard, but finishing the job can take a long time. Sometimes we test fairly large scenarios involving lots and lots of lead, so almost anything may be used for testing purposes (you don't want to know the details). I think gaming is more important than the toys, so it doesn't bother me much to make allowances. But don't get me wrong, most of my gaming is with finished figures against opponents with finished armies. |

We always used painted figures. We put a lot of time into building our terrain so we want painted figures fighting over it. |

No. We are social gamers, don't go in comps but painting is part of the hobby. We also use good looking terrain and wear pants. We're also adults. I have no problem with kids playing with unpainted figs and what you do in the privacy of your own home is your business. But for an adult to take unpainted figs to a club does not set right with me. If need be, spray black, base and decorate bases, bit of flesh on hands and face (if applicable) and you're ready to go. If you're talking 40k this would work with most armies. Apply details later. |

MDIvancic | 16 Jan 2010 7:18 p.m. PST |
Sure, all the time, especially if we are starting a new game or period. Once I've got established armies I won't field a new one until its painted. I never bring anything to a convention that's not painted (silly OFM, of course you don't bring unpainted figures to a tournament). |
Neotacha | 16 Jan 2010 7:21 p.m. PST |
Sure. Over Christmas we gave a (board)game to a friend and the figures that came with it were not painted. We played anyway. But when we bought our copy of the game, Michael pulled out the minis and is currently painting them. |

IMHO board games don't usually count, however tabletop figure games will never see an unpainted figure in my games room!! |

I don't use unpainted figs. If it was a game at a buddy's house and we were trying out a set of rules I'd live with some primed figs. But at a show or local store, no way. Heck 34 years ago when I first started we would arrive at the Game store hours early to slap some paint on our newly purchased Custom Cast Fantasy figs to fight later that day. No paint and no play even back then. Thanks, John |

This is quite the change from the previous unpainted topic awhile ago with a few hundred responses to it where there were some arguments for using unpainted figs. Maybe the tide is turning towards only using painted figs? |

board games don't usually count Goodness yes, I wouldn't compare a board game, even with miniatures, to a table top wargame as far as the requirement for painting goes. I play with unpainted minis in the Axis and Allies and other board games, for example. The closest I've come to presenting unpainted minia were these Airfix Matildas that were built in a huge hurry the night before a game and I didn't have time to paint tracks and black wash them (my technique takes a few days to dry): picture One friend, when he moved here, had us over for a game of PK using bare lead. We played and afterward told him god naturedly how dirty we felt. He is now, a number of years later, as far as I'm concerned, a master painter and his tables (usually ancients and horse and musket compared to my WWII) are better looking than mine. He never fielded another unpainted army again – at least not with us! In a way, though, I have to confess to being a bit of a hypocrite – I don't paint most of my building models, those these are railway models that come in multiple and apropriate colours

I use a lot of unpainted or only partially painted figures. It's all about the game for me. But then, I also use chits and counters a lot, too. Then again, I'm a strong believer in the power of imagination. |
Doctor X | 16 Jan 2010 11:36 p.m. PST |
Personally I would never do it. However
If I have someone who is just getting into gaming, just bought an army and is in the middle of painting it up, etc. and really wants to ply with their army over another one I've already got painted I'm surely not going to be a jerk and rain on their parade. Everyone has to start somewhere and I will never be one of those guys who chases people away from the hobby because the other person doesn't have his army the way I like it, or use my set of rules, etc. Only a total would do something as small as that. |
