These look really cool, but how large are they (what does N scale mean for these guys)?

Would the one below work for 15mm?

N = 1:160. 15mm = 1:100 abouts.

IMO the transport would be too small for 15mm. The mechs would fit in as walkers, which is what I do. Some of the planes and things like Spiders work well for 6mm. The Baron would work well in 6mm as a large dropship with some heavy rocket/missle armaments. Tanks ar iffy. Some seem large, more on the 12mmm instead of 10mm/N scale side.

I love CAV. I'm glad John Bear Ross is doing stuff in 15mm. He's done most of my favorite CAV stuff.

Some of the CAV ground vehicles are closer to 6mm as mentioned. All of the aircraft started out at 6mm. Then they started to release "true scale" versions in 10mm. These are marked accordingly but are pretty hefty and a fair bit more expensive.

Next to 15mm some of the mechs might look like battlesuits.

The vehicles will look too small for 15mm. But the mechs will make good heavy Powered Armor or Large robots.

Reaper CAV mechs are fine for 15mm. I use them with my Peter Pig AK-47 figures. Looks great!

GypsyComet14 Jan 2010 9:21 p.m. PST

Some of the CAV mechs fit into 15mm better than others. I look for a large enough chassis and decent sized canopy.

Most C.A.V.s are described as 2-seaters. You could probably handwave them as 15mm assuming they're cramped single-seaters, especially ones like the Dictator, which has a huge canopy.

Sargonarhes15 Jan 2010 6:57 a.m. PST

Yeah, I agree with the rest. The walkers can pass for 15mm, but most if not all the vehicles are limited to their scale or 6mm.
Granted the Reaper's Wolverine tank makes a big a*s tank in 6mm. You could use them as drones in 15mm if you wanted to I suppose.

Here, for a sense of scale.

How about using the Czar as a 6mm dropship? Does anyone have one and can comment on whether this is reasonable? I could envisage the cockpit as side by side seating…

Erik M06 Feb 2010 4:13 a.m. PST

Scales gentlemen, scales…
N-scale = 1:144(UK) = 1:160 (world) = 12mm/11mm
TT-scale = 1:120 = 15mm
HO-scale = 1:87 = 20mm
OO-scale = 1:76 = 23mm (UK again) ~ 25mm

commanderroj06 Feb 2010 11:02 a.m. PST

Yes I know, but if there is nothing on the miniature that obviously gives the scale away, then, Like so may starship models, who is going to dispute it despite what the manufacturers say the scale is. The only obvious thing i can see on the Czar is the cockpit, but so many sci-fi backgrounds have very large cockpits, and i mentioned side by side seating, F-111 style.

Battle Works Studios06 Feb 2010 11:09 a.m. PST

Many of the CAV pieces that have cockpits could equally well have them painted as something else, too. They don't have to be big clear armorglass bubbles, especially if you slap some greeble on them to break up the lines a bit.

Erik M06 Feb 2010 11:23 a.m. PST

Going smaller than 15mm and life's a biatch. But also mightily easier. Size by side scale and look is more important than actual scale. Luckily! :D

Hm, that Baron APC is said to go with the P07112F base. Anyone know how big that one is?

infojunky06 Feb 2010 1:32 p.m. PST

The Cav stuff while technically N Scale varies a lot in the visual, so it really depends on the vehicle.

That looks like a pretty cramped cockpit for 15mm there Spartan, but it looks very passable.

Would that be used as a size 1 or 2 infantry walker with Stargrunt rules?

MiniatureReview07 Feb 2010 8:57 p.m. PST

Just to let you know. The guy who did a lot of CAV work is coming out with his own company. He will be producing both 6mm and 15mm figures.
