Seen it. Won't belive it until I have a copy that I bought physically from an LGS. SJGames really annoys me with the Lucy Van Pelt routine as far as OGRE/GEV are concerned. |
Hastati | 14 Jan 2010 5:58 a.m. PST |
Well, the picture does say 6th edition. Frankly, at this point I'd say it might be more appropriate of them to post the photo on April 1st. |
jfleisher | 14 Jan 2010 7:35 a.m. PST |
I'm hopeful, but I've been disappointed many times by the lack of attention that Ogre gets at SJG
The Lucy Van Pelt image describes my feelings perfectly
|
Lucius | 14 Jan 2010 7:46 a.m. PST |
Privateer4hire – LOL. I've been trying to kick that football since 1977. I think that I finally learned my lesson a couple of years ago – but you never can tell. SURELY she won't pull it away, this time . . . |
Broadsword | 14 Jan 2010 9:44 a.m. PST |
Would be nice, but ain't holdin' ma breath. |
Tgerritsen | 14 Jan 2010 11:25 a.m. PST |
They've been talking about a relaunch of Ogre for a couple of years now. I sure hope it happens this year. |
Farstar | 14 Jan 2010 2:11 p.m. PST |
At the moment I'd settle for better stocking of the miniatures. |
Chuckaroobob | 14 Jan 2010 9:33 p.m. PST |
I'm still waiting for the Hvy Tank and MSL Tank to be released in "Macro" scale. Who ever heard of releasing a macroture line with ONE freakin' vehicle? Gimme strength
. |
GypsyComet | 15 Jan 2010 9:25 a.m. PST |
The macro experiment was considered a failure by SJG, so you may as well break out the plasticard and work up that HVY yourself. |
jfleisher | 15 Jan 2010 11:57 a.m. PST |
I've been working on bits and pieces for a "macro" scale Mk V
I turned some aluminum secondaries on my metal lathe, they came out looking pretty good. I think the tough part is going to be the treads

Privateer4hire | 15 Jan 2010 8:11 p.m. PST |
If it were a Munchkin game, you can bet that sum-gun would already have been published, sold out and in reprint :) |
javelin98 | 15 Jan 2010 9:26 p.m. PST |
OGRE and Car Wars were always my favorite SJG titles. Sadly, neither gets much love from the mothership these days. |
Chuckaroobob | 15 Jan 2010 10:36 p.m. PST |
Mk V in Macro? You must be a true believer! I've thought about using my Bauhaus Grizzly, although the size is right the style is totally different. I'd love to see some pictures of your project when it's finished! |
Lucius | 16 Jan 2010 9:47 a.m. PST |
I have this dream that they sell the Ogre/GEV rights to Days of Wonder, or Fantasy Flight. I give a lot of credit to SJG for staying in business and meeting payroll for decades, in an industry that is notoriously unstable. It is an amazing accomplishment. But only a company like DoW, or FFG, can bring Ogre/GEV into the 21st century. Another incomplete, 1980's-style release of the same old game, is doomed to fail. |
Caesar | 17 Jan 2010 6:46 a.m. PST |
The game doesn't need to be changed, it just needs a new release. FFG would hire some Euro designer and change the rules significantly, then have to release an 'expansion' which is really a rules patch to fix the problems with the 'revamped' rules. Meanwhile, Classic Ogre will be the more sought after set of rules, even amongst the "Ameritrashers" that think FFG's games are "da bomb" because of all the miniatures and thick carboard that they come with. |
Lucius | 17 Jan 2010 10:26 a.m. PST |
I've got hundreds of Ogre miniatures, including my Martian Metals ones. I've been a fan for decades. I like the game. But if you re-release Ogre Version 6.0 in the same format that it has always been, then it will sell just as fitfully as it has the last few times. And that will be that – forever, this time. Some game mechanics have evolved, and are better than others. Memoir '44 is a better game than Advanced Squad Leader. Columbia ACW block games are better than Avalon Hill's 1961 Gettysburg. If the Star Trek film franchise can be re-booted, then Ogre can be, as well. Besides, what do you have against a big boxes chock full of miniatures and thick cardboard? |
tovarischdavid | 18 Jan 2010 9:18 a.m. PST |
I have the game and most of the minis. Ive heard it said that this is his (S.J.'s) fave line out of all the SJG products. Yet nothing new ever comes out. Still waiting for the release of the OGRE Ninja and the Cruise Missile Crawler in mini form, and have been waiting for years. But this does not mean that I won't keep buying more OGRE stuff or from playing the lone sacred copy of OGRE Miniatures that I do have. |
Farstar | 18 Jan 2010 12:46 p.m. PST |
The Ninja has been released. It just keeps selling out
|
Caesar | 19 Jan 2010 11:34 a.m. PST |
And Ogre Miniatures has been rereleased as a pdf, along with all the books and a free update for those who already own the game. |
Farstar | 19 Jan 2010 1:02 p.m. PST |
And the Cruise Missile Crawler *was* released back when Ral Partha had the minis, but there are apparently issues with the master that keep it out of production now. The sculptor (and caster) explained it all here on TMP a while back: TMP link |
Covert Walrus | 19 Jan 2010 1:51 p.m. PST |
Yes, I have a Ral Partha Paneuro Cruise Missile Crawler myself; I also bought a scratchbuilt Combine one off a chap on eBay that looks rather nice and a little beyond my skills at present. You cna still see a lot of Ral Partha-released items on eBay in addition, currently some Combine tanks are up somewhere there. Clearly, there is support for the game from SJG, but no huge revival from the customers, apart from those completing collections. |
Paint it Pink | 24 Jan 2010 7:33 a.m. PST |
Ogre/GEV the collectible miniatures game with plastic pre-painted miniatures and personality cards to re-invent the game and inject a va-va-voom into an otherwise moribund market. YMMV. |

Lion in the Stars | 18 Jul 2010 7:14 p.m. PST |
Did you notice that the MkV in the Ogre v. Munchkins picture was precut plastic like the Pirates o/t XYZ game? |
Erik M | 19 Jul 2010 9:24 p.m. PST |
Ihatespeedos ~ They didn't make the dead-line
:O Lion in the Stars ~ Couldn't miss it. But it's also a neat way to make a playable pre-view. If it's pre-cut, then let's hope there's black plastic
So one doesn't need to paint all them white ends. |
Cog Comp | 20 Jul 2010 12:08 a.m. PST |
I am a regular pestered of Steve to re-imagine OGRE. I have been telling hi since the mid-90's that the game needs to be updated for the new millennium, and it needs to loose the Cold War atmosphere that engulfed the first version. We are past that, and it is always possible to go back to OGRE Classic if one wishes to re-live a particular future that never was (to tie this to another thread)
In fact, I think I'll give him a call tomorrow about this, as I wish to make certain he is aware of the GEV issue, and replace them with something reasonable, like helicopters or drones. |
Little Big Wars | 20 Jul 2010 4:34 a.m. PST |
There is no GEV issue
the people that GEVs are popular with don't care if they make sense. Hell, in a universe with gigantic, self-aware tanks with ridiculously high ground pressure, I think any deficiencies of GEVs are overshadowed. |
Cog Comp | 20 Jul 2010 11:04 a.m. PST |
That is another of my problems
The Size of the OGREs needs to come down a bit. Considering the size of the OGREs is less of an engineering challenge that getting a GEV to operate as a battlefield weapon, I don't think it's that big of a deal. And, if there really is a "Re-Imagining" that could take place, then both of those are issues to be dealt with. |
Farstar | 20 Jul 2010 11:36 a.m. PST |
In fact, I think I'll give him a call tomorrow about this, as I wish to make certain he is aware of the GEV issue, and replace them with something reasonable, like helicopters or drones. Won't happen. The Armorcast macro scale resins license failed because of the issue of adding more detail to the existing concepts. Steve didn't want to do even that. |
Battle Works Studios | 20 Jul 2010 11:49 a.m. PST |
Helis don't make sense in the Ogre universe anyway. Anything that clears treetop level is going to be eating railgun rounds, and even with BPC armor technology you can only make rotors just so tough. Pretty much the same problem aircraft have in the Hammer's Slammers setting – you fly in sight of the enemy, you die. Which makes GEVs (with nice light BPC armor) more reasonable – they've got the speed to take over the scouting roles true fliers can no longer perform. |
LostPict | 20 Jul 2010 3:50 p.m. PST |
Just my $0.02, lets hope that any re-imagining of OGRE doesn't fundamentally change the game concept from one of super massive tank fighting its way through hordes of tiny high-speed woefully under-armored gnats. Something else may be more realistic, but hardly OGRE. Personally, I would just like them to bring all OOP minis, maps, and rules out to play again. No clickies, no collectibles, no alternate time-lines, alternate technologies, just plain ole improbable OGRES fighting those those oh so charming GEVs with all their technical engineering challenges. Anything else would be like LOTR without the dwarves, elves, flying dragons, and hobbits since they aren't biologically sustainable from a natural selection viewpoint (aka we look like we do instead of them). Lost Pict |
Little Big Wars | 20 Jul 2010 7:04 p.m. PST |
LostPict has hit the nail on the head. OGRE without ginormous tanks and impractical GEVs isn't OGRE
it's just a generic sci-fi/near future tactical simulation board game. |
Cog Comp | 22 Jul 2010 1:58 a.m. PST |
There is no reason why the Ginormous OGRE couldn't remain in the game, but the GEVs are just silly. |
Warbeads | 22 Jul 2010 3:05 a.m. PST |
I keep having this visual/audio flashbacks of Raising the Dead, "He's a Borg, Wil!," and The Monkey's Paw. The game is dead, guys! It sucks but it's true. SJG might make money on it but certainly not "making a living" level of money. Gracias, Glenn |
28mmMan | 22 Jul 2010 7:58 a.m. PST |
It sounds like someone other than an Ogre fan is trying their hand at title
kinda like SciFi channel showing Mary Knows Best and wrestling
really? Really really? Ogre is like that family dog
great as a puppy, cause everyone loves puppies
then great as a young dog keeping the family entertained and protected
the best friend to cheer up your day
then he gets older and slows down
more of a poop machine and the puppy luster is gone
"cue memories from Cats" karmic right? YouTube link
then is forgotten as a burden
but when thinking about the puppy days, as yes those were so much fun
"Steve, when spot dies can we get a new puppy?"
Steve "sure, sure, just let me finish the spare room first
" Who would have thought an Ogre could be defeated by apathy; sigh. |

Aye – the plywood Ogre chasing after some 'crunchkins'!! picture Sort of reminds me of Star Wars in a way. Take three good films, wait for a few decades, and then re-visit the story
.. Afraid it's all gone 'Gungan' :o( |

Paint it Pink | 31 Jul 2010 3:44 a.m. PST |
Ogre and the GEVs are a conceptual conceit of the game. Just like battlemechs in Battletech, they ain't real, but make for an interesting game idea. Ogre click-tech would be the ideal way to go, because it would make all the models self-contained stats wise, and could be used to add more grades of degradation etc. However, such a license is unlikely to happen. |
