Spotted this thread,
TMP link

and was looking for the mongrel site, but it has vanished.. does anyone know what has actually happend to them?
Have they gone out of business or is it some kind of rebuild of the website etc?

von Paulus13 Jan 2010 5:36 p.m. PST

Nobody knows as the owner who has had the business these past 3 or more years won't communicate with his customers or with his ex(?)UK agent (so it would seem from whats been said on the other post). The only other person who may know whats going on is Mr Hicks the sculptor but either he is under orders not to say or doesn't know anything either? Its a truly bizarre way of doing things.

Anyway, well done for keeping the issue on the TMP front page. Lets hope it does the trick and illicits a response.

Had an email from Ian aka Crouchie, and he has confirmed that he has ceased his involvement with Mongrel Miniatures.
He does not know what the owner, Ben Checota I believe, is planning to do, if anything.

So it seems, it is a case of waiting to see what happens now. Kicking my self as I was about to put in an order for myself and some fellow club members, but held off doing so before christmas to hopefully get some more interest in the club, that will teach me.

So for now it looks like, the range is sadly dead.

is the master/range available to buy? i wonder, then you may be able to buy them again.
but if does not comunicate with anyone how would i find out the position and price ect!

Too bad as Mongrel made a good start with Congo figure line.

Add this thread to the tally of 'threads and e-mails ignored by Mr Checkota'!

Von Paulus

I can tell you Mongrel will be at shows this year. Ben Checota is aware that things have dropped and does want to get on top of it. He has owned MM for about a year and half not three.

A year and a half? Two at least, if not more. It was February 2008 when I finally lost all patience with trying to communicate via the yahoo group and a lack of a response from Ben Checota (and that was after a year of being distracted by a WWI project). Looking back at some of the promises made then (some of which are repeated on old threads here on TMP) you cannot blame customers for being totally sceptical about any promise as far as Mongrel is concerned. Ben Checota said he would be more communicative on his yahoo group, he wasn't and it died a death.

There were also pics of the African mercs on the yahoo group posted sometime in 2008 that were supposed to be available in the New Year of 2009 and weren't. Its either been silence or empty promises that come to nothing. The little that has been released (namely the few Africa packs) were previewed for months but were then not available to buy for months? Its a truly bizarre way of doing business and from a customer point of view its been incredibly frustrating. I don't want to give the man my custom. I simply want to know what happened to a damn good minis company.

I saw Mongrel being sold thru Pontoonier Miniatures at Cold Wars today. They had the African Mercenaries, Simbas and Cold War Brit marines. The fellow working the booth says they just recieved 1000's of miniatures and were still boxing them up. They were $8.00 USD USD for a box of 4. Their contact number is 414-963-8719, their address is 2302 E. Newberry Blvd. Milwaukee, WI 53211.
