I've just finished paint stripping my old Zoats…
picture

They're now sitting here in their naked silver. Im looking for pictures of Zoat colour schemes. Are there any old pics of Zoats appearing in White Dwarf?

Im looking for ideas for painting these fantasy Zoats. What colours would you use? Fleshy tones or Green to match their forest homes?

The only colour picture of a fantasy Zoat I can recall is in the first edition Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay in one of the colour plates.

I've always seen Zoats painted a medium green color.

I 2nd the medium green color, but I have seen them in browns that look very good.

some "company" should make plastic non-zoat/posline/dragon centour minis, I think they would sell well if they did.

I always wondered if this picture was some sort of ugly homage to a zoat…

magiccards.info/fe/en/10.html

It's in color, though not a color one might choose neccesarily.

Ok so I like the top right hand zoat here: link

It looks like an green ink wash but I can't determine the base colour… what paint colours would get this effect?

Parmenion11 Jan 2010 9:29 a.m. PST

The 'official' colour for Zoats was originally green, as others have pointed out. This changed to a fairly dark red for 40k Zoats in White Dwarf 145, to match the look of the new Tyranids. Personally I'll always think of Zoats as being mid/dark green.

EDIT – swordlord, your post came up as I was typing. That's the classic 40k Zoat, the one that also appeared in the Rogue Trader book and the colour I always think of for them – but I'm afraid I can't advise on paint use to achieve that, certainly not without my painting table to hand.

Thanks jpattern – I think this is the best one picture

How was this paint effect achieved?

That's very nice- especially the orb.

I have to agree with Parmenion- I have a squad of 40K zoats stripped, have been looking at them for ages trying to think of a non-green scheme for them, but the classic Rogue Trader look is so embedded in my mind, I'm afraid I would have to stick with it!

Cheers jpattern2 for the link to my blog!
There's also a Rogue Trader Zoat hiding in my Genestealer cult somewhere –

However you paint them that many Zoats in one place is going to look Zoatastic!!

I was once going to make my own unit of Zoats,by taking a Dark Elf Cold One and putting a Lizardman torso on it. The only thing was the feet would have been wrong.

How was this paint effect achieved?

Yellowish basecoat. Green ink applied full strength to some parts. Brown wash appled to the rest. The brown parts are then highlighted with the yellow. The green parts, if the ink is done right, need no further overall work, though you might need more ink after you're done.

It would need to be one of the lighter green inks as well. The darker green inks tend to be rather blue-toned.

You might be able to get close with the current GW Green Wash, as well, though I suspect it would take more than one coat.

Hi guys, first post here, after lurking for a while. I too have a small squad of 40K Zoats, plus the 2 Warhammer ones adn I wasn't too sure of coulours. I've just undercoated my 4 RT zoats in black, and I've been looking at reptile pics for inspiration but to no avail :( That green and yellow one looks great though!

wickerman55502 Mar 2010 4:41 p.m. PST

I'm just jealous you all have ZOATS!

kingofdaveness02 Mar 2010 5:28 p.m. PST

Heh. I have the one with the big gun built into his shoulder- was thinking of doing his biomechanical stuff in Giger blue-greys and go muted with brighter markings for the main body.
Will post pic when I have him done.

28mmMan02 Mar 2010 8:35 p.m. PST

I would be tempted to go with something in a Mars theme…I think the ruddy red with flavors of deep browns and soft tans.

Something like this tyranid warrior picture

Rogue Zoat03 Mar 2010 11:10 a.m. PST

to Wickerman555- Don't be jealous, just track 'em down! :) That's what I've done using a popular internet auction site. Usually they're not too badly priced; although expect it to be anywhere between £10.00 GBP and £20, but then… what's GW's current prices eh? Think the first one I got (the Officer with power glove) was by sheer chance at a games show.

to Kingofdaveness- Please do!! :D Giger is a legend and that sounds great.

28mmMan03 Mar 2010 4:57 p.m. PST

Kinda tempted to use other bits to create zoats…the last one I saw on ebay went for $30 USD with shipping…egads.

Lion in the Stars05 Mar 2010 2:38 p.m. PST

@Swordlord: Looks like a Bleached Bone basecoat. I'd use Ogryn Flesh Wash on the tan parts (thin it down a bit), makes a nice red-brown fleshy shadow. Highlight with more BBone, then BBone and white mixed together for the brightest high points.

I'd use full-strength DARK Green ink on the scaly parts, it gives that effect over light colors, then highlight with a bit of Goblin Green on the highest points.
