I began rummaging through the Warlord stuff I got from the spousal "Ms. Claus" and my jaw dropped when I noticed the price tag on the Warlord ECW General Essex figure. $9.00 USD USD? This is GW pricing. This guy has no special magic powers, no extra power weapons, just a floppy hat, some "lobster armor" and a horse that wasn't quite inspiring. The figure was cast in a brittle metal with some cleaning points that had to be trimmed down on the horse as well as cleaning out the neck/reins area. This is not usually an issue but at $9.00 USD USD, I expect more quality. I'm probably not going to purchase any more Warlord metal figures unless the price comes down about $4.00 USD USD to $5.00, the metal isn't the brittle stuff that won't last over time interacting with fat wargaming fingers, and could be purchased in a box set of generals as per their plastics. You probably overpaid a little. You could have bought that figure for $7.47 USD USD from Maelstrom Games in the UK with free shipping worldwide on any order over 10UKP (about $16 USD USD) That said, I agree with you that the Warlord metal figures are pretty underwhelming compared to their competition. |

$7.47 USD USD is not much of a savings. IMHO that's still overpriced by about 2-4 bucks USD. I also got some of the plastic cavalry. I think the box set was $30.00 USD USD. My jury's out on them too. :( |

Main disappointment I had with the cavalry was that they didn't have the triangular white shirt collars sticking out of their jackets. It seems like illustrations always have this, and so does everyone else's miniatures. Not sure if this was left out to make them more suitable for TYW, some modern research I'm not aware of, or they just forgot. |

I'll go back and check for rider details. I just broke open the box and checked part sprues for completeness. That would definitely suck and no to the group
I won't get nit-noid and add them with Green Stuff. That's dumb and a waste of time that could have been used productively to get the dang things painted! No I won't "paint them in" either. :) It's the little things IMHO that are making the difference between continuing to purchase this company's stuff and staying true to Foundry, Old Glory, Dixon and Renegade for my collection. Those figures consistently look good, paint well and don't give me (well
Foundry does sometimes) "sticker shock". |

This figure is a character figure so probably the most of him that any one person will buy is one, if that. So if you take all of the ECW players world wide, then take from that all of those gaming in 28mm, then take from that all of those that didn't have a royalist army prior to 2009, then only take the ones from that that have a royalist army that could use Rupert (which will be a big percentage of the category before it, admittedly) that is how many figs of this guy they are going to sell. Considering that Foundry cavalry are $8 USD each or something like that, for just line cavalry, the price does not seem to be out of line with one of the companies you plan on staying true to. |

I don't frankly care about the rest of the world nor am I particularly concerned with Warlord's sales figures. The price is outrageous for a single historical figure. GW has set the bar with a $15 USD figure that a guy in our gaming group purchased recently. That plus a $10 USD magazine price has him hitting his own wall. That's even more outrageous. I understand market dynamics and the old adage that I can take my disposable income and do with it as I may. And I will. I've hit my price wall and will vote with my pocketbook. I definitely don't pay $8 USD USD for any Foundry figure. That's what the marketplace on TMP, Bartertown and EBay are for. Thanks to the TMP members, Bartertown members and Ebay'ers on this list for providing an alternative to hyped-prices for so-so quality. Ah
I feel better now! Rant over

I'm just pointing out that you are ignorant about the realities of sculpting figures. If you don't want to buy it that is fine, but there are certain economics involved in figure production as anything else. To say that the price is outrageous is simply to admit that you don't really understand what is going on. If you don't pay $8 USD for foundry figs that doesn't mean that the retail price for Foundry figs is not $8 USD for a cavalry model. Clearly you didn't need to pay $9 USD for the Rupert figure, the fact that you did doesn't reflect on how much the figure costs to put into production. Others are selling it for, as Plessiez, $7.50 USD a figure. If you are going to go into the aftermarket it is entirely possible that you could get the figure for less still. |

I think the Essex model is lovely, I bought through maelstrom and I dont mind the price for a persoanlity model when the rst of my army is mainly plastic at a good price also from maesltrom! |

The Warlord metal figures are all quite expensive. But I love the Rupert and Essex models. When you take into account the time to paint and base a really nice model, the cost of the figure is insignificant. I hope as many ECW gamers as possible buy them so we can keep getting these great 'special' models. Mike B |
