I've just about got my Russian 28mm project where I want it and want to add several units of pike armed/muket armed St.Petersburg and Moscow Militia. I really like the Steve Barber figures (big heads not withstanding). What size wargaming units should I paint? I'm thinking our rules are approx. 1:60 but I've not seen much more than total numbers of militia at Borodino and Smolensk.
How large should these units be? I don't want to buy but once. Any pearls o'wisdom would be appreciated.

I made mine 360 men strong.

I crunched some numbers for you and I think 12 figure units are perfect. But they should be all musket or all pike.

Dear Steve
I wrote a book upon the Russian Militia of the Napoleonic Wars. Within it there is a breakdown of the unit sizes.

Moscow Opolchenie consisted of
3 Jager Regts of 4 Bns, 8 Foot Regts (mainly pike armed), 1 battery giving a total of 34867 men [p28]

Each Regiment had 3-4 Bns of 4 coys each of 150 men. So the theortical strength of a battalion was 600 men.

The Moscow Militia was split into three Division in August 1812.

e.g.
1st Moscow Opolchenie Division (12 August 1812)
I-IV/1st Jäger Regiment GM Demidov 32/131/1910
I-IV/2nd Foot IR GM Odoevskoi 22/176/2143 29/60/2007
I-IV/4th Foot IR ? ? 37/10/2400
I-IV/6th Foot IR GM Lopukhin 39/50/2050 42/9/1850

thanks to all. I'm going to Barber's site now and get me some militia! Gotta' love 'em. Has anyone used the LBMS Russian transfers (medieval?) or the Byzantine transfers for the Banners? They'd definitely look cool!
