Looking to expand my collection of 28mm.I know of Brigade,Assault Group, and Old Glory.
Brigade too exspensive.TAG exspensive and too small.Old Glory? How do they match size wise with Artizan,Crusader, and Black Tree figs?

Pizzagrenadier03 Jan 2010 9:30 p.m. PST

You mean Battle Honors Japanese? I have a platoon. They are on the small side (though this might be a good thing considering the small stature and average height of Japanese at the time of the war). Very skinny. However, they have a LOT of variety in poses, headgear, and kit. They do a nice job of putting a good amount of rifle poses out there to make those big IJA squads.

Downside is they don't mix well style, bulk, or height wise to anything else out there.

Second downsize is that the pack structures leave something to be desired and the bags do not give you the right amount of minis or the proper mix to do a squad per bag so you need to buy extra.

Plus is that they have everything you need to do a platoon and support, plus mule teams.

Rifles and LMGs in one pack, command in another, heavy weapons, extras, specialists, and arty crew in other bags.

I replaced my whole platoon of these BH IJA with Brigade's IJA who offer the same variety but in pack structures that are MUCH easier to make platoons with and they look a lot better IMO. But since you mentioned cost (though I personally don't see how they are more expensive than others) I thought I'd give you my two cents on the BH minis. However, Take a look at the BH packs and you might find that to get what you need to do a platoon, you might end up spending as much as a proper platoon from Brigade.

On a side note, the sculpting style reminds me of Mike Broadbent's. They look good opposite Brigade's Commonwealth pac war models. Something about the poses and style that they have a similar look.

Hey Keith,
Thanks for the good info.Sounds like the BH are not my type.As for cost.Yeah I guess if you have to buy those big packs to get what you need the BH stuff isn't that cheap, even with a army card. But Brigade are more exspensive than most. Brigade 4 figs for $10. USD
Crusader with a army card are $1.25 USD each, I believe.
Renegade regiments cheap as dirt.
Artizan from Maelstrom Games 4 for $7.47.Or the Warstore 4 for $8 USD and change.
Black Tree if you can get them are less than $1 USD a fig.
But they hardly count I guess.
Lon's figs are nice and they do some stuff that are not done by anyone else but I'm looking at 100 plus figures so …

Glad I could help with the scale/style comparisons.

I was not aware Old Glory sold Battle Honors minis from their site(s). The sites I know that sell them are 19th Century miniatures and Warweb (Grandiosity?), and I didn't think the Old Glory membership applied to those.

Good luck in your search. The Japanese are really fun to play in 28mm. Just don't get too overwhelmed by all that brown and use vehicles to break up the monotony of painting a sea of brown uniforms (trust me). For skin tone I use GW's Tanned Flesh and highlighted with GW Dwarf Flesh and it worked out perfectly.

1st Corps have a few Japanese, I'm working on the samples for the website now and will posting pictures next weekend.

I can't really comment on the scale issues but the variety in BH was a major plus for me, as well as the level of detail – what I at first thought was a casting defect I realised were nostrils, not some sort of dirt in the metal on the underside of the nose…

Wargamer Blue04 Jan 2010 12:59 a.m. PST

I love the TAG Japanese figures. Good value because TAG have free worldwide postage. And they are exactly the same size as Brigade Games Japanese.

fitterpete04 Jan 2010 4:21 a.m. PST

Keith,
Now I'm a bit confused too.The figures I'm talking about are on the Old Glory 25s site and the oldglory minatures site. They are from the Berlin or Bust range and are also on Westwinds site.So where is Battle Honors coming from?
Pete

Disco Joe04 Jan 2010 6:40 a.m. PST

Pete, Battle Honors were sold here in the states from Old Glory 15s which is not the same as Old Glory 25s. As far as I know they are two different companies.
Old Glory 25s Berlin or Bust range which is on the Westwind site is orginally by Westwind and Old Glory 25 was handling them here in the states.
I personally have and like the TAG and Brigade Games Japanese and they do mix in well so even if they seem alittle expensive in my opinion they are well worth it.

TAG and Brigade blend together seemlessly.
I do like 1st Corp though, oversized bayonets, an asian version of 'bayonet envy syndrome'.

Pizzagrenadier04 Jan 2010 10:21 a.m. PST

fitterpete: Ahh, my confusion there. I thought you were talking about Battle Honors and I completely forgot that Old Glory carries the West Wind line of WWII stuff.

I have only ever seen a few of the West Wind minis and I don't know how their packs are organized, so my comments only apply to the Battle Honors minis.

Thunder04 Jan 2010 2:03 p.m. PST

Also remember, the Battle Honors sold by OG15, is not eligible for an army card discount as OG15 no longer offers the card. However if you make a large purchase of several hundred dollars, they do often have discounts that are equal to the card discount.

fitterpete04 Jan 2010 3:22 p.m. PST

OK got it now.So battle honors is out.Tag and Brigade mix well together. My confusion there as the only TAG I have are some Rennasaince(SP) cav and they were a bit smaller than the Foundry and a lot samller than the Renegade I had.
So does anyone know about the Westwind?

SDallimore04 Jan 2010 5:52 p.m. PST

Mine are TAG and Brigade and size wise they are compatible. However both lines have figs that are smaller than the others in the range – something that bugs me. But otherwise both are a good value and paint up brilliantly. You almost have to use both for any type of variety as neither range have enough variety on their own. You can't go wrong with these two lines ;-D

NOW…if someone did proper Early war Brits/Indians/Commonwealth that would be Brilliant! For Malaya, Singapore, Burma, Hong Kong, etc.(hint…hint Mr. Hicks)

Wargamer Blue05 Jan 2010 12:50 a.m. PST

SDallimore, Battle Honors have all the figures you need.

fitterpete, West Wind are true 25mm, they are smaller than Brigade and TAG. West Wind and Battle Honors figures fit perfect together.

fitterpete05 Jan 2010 4:29 a.m. PST

thanks Rat,looks like Westwind are out too.Not big enough for me.
So where do you get TAG in the US? On warweb they are $16 USD something a pack. Some packs say 8 figures others don't give a figure count, but on the TAG site it says they come in packs of 4.

Wargamer Blue05 Jan 2010 1:55 p.m. PST

I order TAG direct. UK to Australia. The free postage is a great deal. They come in packs of four.

The Gray Ghost12 Jan 2010 3:51 p.m. PST

No Name30 Jan 2010 3:44 a.m. PST

I have the remains of my TAG Pacific War stock in my ebay shop, the eight figure packs are £6.00 GBP (so around $9-10).
