Hi all,
I've been collecting and converting Schleich and Papo figures. My daughter and I have been gaming with them using A Song for Blades and Heroes. That got me wondering, are there modern and sci-fi toy ranges that scale well with them? I want them for sort of a HeroScape style game using Mutants and Death Rays.

90mm (1/18th) has the same problem as 28mm. Each manufacturer has their own interpretation.
Gijoe Rise of Cobra figures are the best modern and sci fi, but they are almost 1/17 scale.
Narnia figures (the humans) are a bit big next to Schleich, but the monsters look good.
Star wars believe it or not are shrinking, they should fit in well as the line continues. Get rid of the light sabers and I think they are great sci-fi figures.
These guys might be cool:

Haven;t seen them out of the package, they seem small 1/18th size, good news is they are dirt cheap!

Sticking to 1/18th will save you money and allow for more customization as guns and parts tend to be swappable. Try to not buy troops from the store if you can. Then start on Ebay at $1 USD for most "rank and file" types…often several hundred entries a day. In a month I was able to build both a large Clone and Separatist army for Star Wars skirmishes for about 200 dollars. That was guns, accessories, and about 400 figs.

Also…search Ebay action figures for the phrase "army builder".

You can obtain new guns by buying from these guys:

Great prices and service.

There is a guy who sells large nicely priced packs of stands on Ebay as well. I will try and track his information down if you'd like.

Great info! Thanks guys. I noticed scale creep even within the Schleich figures themselves. Several of my foot soldiers are significantly more robust then their mounted counterparts, even when they are the same faction. Nearly the same size will be good enough for me, I think. My daughter doesn't care, we've already ran a mission to rescue the Disney Belle from the Burger King Venom and his Dollar Store Ninja minions, who kept her locked in a Simba castle. all the figures were within an inch of height, so I was good with it.

How old is your daughter? My daughter and I are going to be trying Song of Blades and Heroes soon. She's six and I'm wondering if she'll understand the rolling for activation part.

My daughter is six as well. I explained that die rolling was like drawing a card in Candyland. She rolls and I tell her what she can do.

Schleich and (some) papo figures are magnificent. I too, want to use Song of Blades and Heros for 1/18th gaming, but I am working towards running fantasy/Lord of the Rings type skirmishes. If you want to add some variety to your army also try a british company called BBI (this stands for Blue Box Inc.) figures. Their "Legends" series is jaw dropping and dead-on for Schleich scale. Also, a british company called Safari has an extensive collection, but be careful their quality is uneven. Many are just simplistic cartoon quality- but their fantasy line can be amasing, their monataur is the best I have seen. Approximately the same price as BBI/Papo/Schleich too. Also look at The Golden Compass series, they are 1/18th and have several figures good for SciFi or even Victorian battles. I haven't tried the Narnia series, it sounds very good, great idea Backyardpatrol!! Don't forget to look at The Mcfadden lines. Most of these are 1/12th or 1/13th, but every once in a while you find 1/18th scale. They are unbelieveable in realistic quality , but are very overpriced. Buy them on ebay- they can be as low as 10 cents on the dollar. Also, for you fantasy gamers try the Warcraft series. they are a bit large, but, again, some of their figures can be spot-on.
Now, my big question to everyone is; what do you use for terrain? I would like to run a few games for wargaming conventions- and the prettier the table, the bigger the draw. Any ideas???

Hmmm, that's odd, I thought I replied to this thread. I saw some of the BBI figs at an online toystore site. There are some good ones. I started out with the idea of converting the Schleich and Papo figures to my vision of LOTR, WETA be danged. With work and school, I doubht I'll have time, so I'm sticking with using the figs as is.

In regards to terrain, this gent makes 54mm wooden trees
link perhaps he would make 90mm ones? Michigan Toy Soldier Co sells the Edix toy castle system link which would look awesome on a con table.

What is WETA?

mrkprkr09 Jan 2010 2:35 a.m. PST

Hi gozer87, thanks for the link to Michigan Toy Co. their castle set and ADDITIONS LOOKS VERY INTERESTING.

gozer8709 Jan 2010 11:20 p.m. PST

WETA is the production company Jackson used to make the LOTR films. They do awesome work, they also did the production design for the Narnia films. But their version of Middle-Earth has become the de facto one, and in the case of Gondor's soliders doesn't jibe with mine.
