Hello

Are there any decent books out there covering Henry VII's army post WOTR?

Did he have any military forays outside England at all?

He was a diplomat, not a warrior. He did undertake a rather half-hearted invasion of Brittany in 1490ish.

IIRC, there was some skirmishing on the Scottish border – does this count? He had the reputation of being not merely a diplomat by a very frugal man (i.e. a dyed in the wool skinflint and miser), and based on this I have wondered how much gelt he spent on the army at all!

It's worth bearing in mind that armies then existed only when they were needed. Henry would have had his own retinues, as would his dukes, but that doesn't constitute keeping up an 'army' as we know it.

After the end Hundred Years War and the Wars of the Roses, England's foreign adventures were very few, and the country was relatively peaceful. The heathen Scots and Irish notwithstanding grin

I know what you mean – I meant in terms of the sort of "capital" items the king would have to fund and couldn't be aquired quickly (e.g. cannon).

I have always had visions of him saying "New cannon? What do I want a new cannon for? That one's barely fifty years old and it hasn't fired above ten thousand rounds! What do you think I am, made of money?" etc etc

First time I hear about this… checking the details, it was around 1492. Sounds like there might be some room for what-if scenarios involving actual fighting.
