Just seen these… wanted some for years… even pondered sculpting 15mm range but had been thinking of research trip to Innsbruck first.

They are not cheap, but who can resist an Napoleonic army in lederhosen & alpine hats?

Pondering Legends of the Old West mass battle for these…

Being Tyrolian this caught my eye. Don't know what I would do with them as I don't play Napoleonics. Maybe some sort of Pulp game with the an area in the Alps like the land that time forgot.

The campaign is suitable for skirmish… or they'd make a pretty diorama! (eg the Cannon crew or Hofer & staff)

Ironically i visited the ski-jump at Innsbruck back in '90 on a school trip (the main focus of which was Oberammergau) & I managed to miss seeing the cyclorama

I'd go back like a shot. a few years ago my wife booked us into a hotel in the Wildschonau. Turned out to be just down the road from the village I stayed in in '90.

Terrific beer, clean air, great service mentality. What's not to like?

Front Rank do Bavarian foes

As do Foundry.

References show Bavarians in light blue uniforms, but on the Cyclorama they have dark blue jackets with red breasts.

I'm no Napoleonic expert, can anyone comment on this?

Im painting both sides for this campaign right now. Im using Eureka of course for the Tyroleans and Connessieur for the Bavarians. They are a good match size wise.

Der Alte Fritz has said the Bavarians should be in darker blue than most folks paint them but I'm painting my infantry in that more traditional lighter blue…cuz I like em that way!

There are also near contemporary paintings done by a gentleman I cannot recall right now which shows the Bavarians fighting the Tyroleans and they are wearing that cornflower blue uniform. Oh, and their light troops wearing green uniforms with grey trousers.

Also in another thread on this subject – you'd have to go back and search for it – a gentleman said that the cyclorama was actually painted quite a few years after the real thing and that the Tyrolean costumes were not what they wore back in 1809. So that could make the Bavarians wrong too?

I am certainly no expert but Im going with what will please me, the hobby is about fun.

Good luck if you decide to pursue this interesting campaign, perfect for lots of skirmishes IMHO.

Could I encourage any Tyrolean, or simply German correspondents to put an article out on this campaign? I suspect it would be difficult for non-German speakers to research this but easy for German-speakers to do so… I would like to know more.

The Cyclorama seems to show different Tyrolean units in different coloured uniforms. Accurate rendition of troops from different valleys or later fantasy?

Blessed Christmas everyone.

CooperSteve,

I wondered too about the history of that campaign then it was suggested I get the book "With Eagles to Glory" by John Gill, 1992. I got my copy on Amazon and it was pretty cheap.

There they have a huge amount of detail on the Bavarians fighting the Tyroleans. Lots of scenarios for skirmishes, ambushes, raids, and a few pitched battles.

Not much help on Tyrolean uniforms though.

Another gentleman more of an expert on this than me by far sent me some jpegs of Tyroleans fighting Bavarians in some paintings commissioned right around that time period. I forget the painter. But he was contemporary. They dont show the Tyroleans in specific uniformed companies like the Cyclorama which was painted many years later. Instead the Tyroleans are in all sorts of colors and dress, like a typical polyglot band of civilians.

Who's right? I dont really know. Im painting my Tyroleans similar to the contemporary paintings though.
