Two videos of a demonstration of the Swedish Bill 2 ATGM against a remote-controlled Centurion tank that has a full load of ammo on board. The missile attacks the thinner armor of the roof. YouTube link YouTube link It was stated on another site that the damage might be mitigated if the tank had the current instantaneous fire-suppression systems on modern AFVs. And, I suspect that the Cent's older style of ammo storage makes it more susceptible to the catastrophic ammo fire. Wyatt |

I bumped into this earlier, Javelin vs. T-72: YouTube link Looked like the T-72 was filled with a nuke. |

The Javelin test was rigged. Javelin will kill a T72
no problem. It doesn't look anything like that

If the Javelin test was rigged, how and for what purpose? I agree the damage seems way over the top. Dan |

Purpose ?? to make the Javelin look better to those paying the money. |

Mucking about with "trials" such as this is a common feature of modern defence procurement. Whilst video from real trials does make it into the public domain, what is commonly released is often the flashy promotional demonstration shots (rather than trials) to make the kit look good in sales videos. |

Maybe its a marketing video for the Bongolesian government. Is the turret in the Centurion video "boiling" as the rounds go off, or is it just an illusion from the flashes?

The turret in the second link looks odd for a centurion, square at the back did the Swedes modify them or is someone "getting clever" |

Best guesses from Tank-net.org
. Hull was filled with C4
Hatches welded shut. It's not a javelin
. it's a destructo ray! Silly, the javelin is an excellent/effective weapon
but a flash and slow cook off doesn't sell as well
. The T72 crew is just as dead either way. Joe Collins |

Hull was filled with C4
Hatches welded shut. I certainly would not want to try doing any hatch-welding on a tank full of C4 in the hull

I thought the Centurian was designed with most of the ammo moved out of the turret except for the ready rounds. The British did the numbers and 60% of tank hits were on the turret. So the best way to keep tanks from blowing up nicely was to move as much of the ammo out of the turret. The Centurian had a history of being a good survival tank for the crew. Greengold went through 6 of them on the Golan Heights during the Yom Kippur war. |
