The Japanese might say "It's all fun and games until someone gets their eye poked out" Which in Japanese would be "Hai, Domo!"

Then it's still funny.. it's just funny with bad depth perception.

In the Sven Hassel books (the ones based on fact) they said all manner of things, few of them polite. However Sven was in a penal regiment, and one of his mates ran around with a yellow bowler hat whenever the officers weren't looking (and sometimes when they were).

It is not "Zu Befehl!" but "Zum Befehl!" (dative: das Befehl).

"the ones based on fact"

I'd love to know which ones were based on fact. The first was just a re-write of All Quiet on the Western Front, and the others just ever more bizarre flights of fantasy. My favourite was probably SS General, even though the Waffen SS were conspicuous by their absence from Stalingrad irl.

"Nein!"

Usually the Germans, in the massive amount of historical research I have done (Kelly's Heroes, Raid on the Iron Coast etc.) seem to not say anything but are motivated to always run out of a door into heavy machine gun fire. Seeing the demise of the 6 or 7 that preceeded them they show absolutely none of that famed NCO initiative and blithely follow into an unending hail of fire. So uggh and ahh and body language by spinning around while clutching the chest seems to be the most common response to orders in my studied opinion.

"Sanitator!" is the German equivalent of "Medic!".

Typical order responses were usually Jawohl or Zu(m) Befehl.

Good question. Supposedly the characters were real (according to the author) but the rest was probably a patchwork of different accounts. Later on it's pure fiction.

Apparently there's a set of minis for the Sven Hassel characters (20mm).

"JAWOLLHERROBERFELD!!!"

That would be the Bundeswehr circa 1985. An Oberfeldwebel is an important personage you don't want to alienate, no Sir.
