Okay so I am looking at the FoW Hueys, and am wondering…should the base colors be an OD green that is then washed out/faded, or should use the FoW British Armour Green Color that they show…

Opinions?

Ideas?

Huh?

Those look like an acceptable oxidized OD to me…

Testors makes a "Helo Drab FS34031" that might help…

That's what I am saying Allen…I see the colors on these models and what they say to use, then I look at some color photos, (sigh), and I see differences…

Maybe I'm just being too picky for 15mm..but the green just doesn't seem to be it…(The British Armour Green)…

Is that what they say to use? Huh.

Well… don't. Paint them OD.

OD will probably look too dark. It doesn't scale well below 1/72, I've noticed.

You can lighten up the testor's helo drab a bit to correct the color shade to scale. A touch of white or bright yellow will probably do it for you.

What color is British Armor green anyway? From the web photos it looks like a shade of OD (which if its for late war it should be…the British switched to a US style OD in IIRC early '44 in order to match with all the lend lease equipment)…

Damon.

Don't confuse anyone with facts about SCC 15, Damon. They never want to hear it.

My dad flew helicopters in Vietnam, in 1968 and part of '69, first with an air assault unit and later with the 498th Medevac battalion. I remember him telling me once that helicopters in the 498th were a very dark green, almost black. Not sure if that was universal, though.

On sort of a side note, the medevac helicopters he flew were required to have red crosses with a white border. Since this seemed dangerously eye-catching to the crews, they mixed some black paint in with the red to dull it down to almost a brown color, and they used a very thin brush to paint a white pinstripe. From a distance, he said it was almost invisible. Didn't matter, though, as they dropped like flies from ground fire anyway, including my dad and two of his crew.

I would imagine that most of the aircraft were painted at the factory, so would be pretty uniform in color. I know from direct experience that it is a huge pain to paint an entire aircraft, so I can't imagine too many would do it in the field unless they really had to. Is there some online resource that might give the paint number used by the factory in those days?

In the early-mid '60s, the Hueys were painted FS14087, which was a glossy deep dark green OD…I'm sure you've seen pics with the large ARMY letters in gigantic white & lots of other colorful markings (yellow on the tail, etc.). During the mid-Vietnam war, the base color changed to X34087 which was a light brownish khaki OD, used with subdued markings. Lot's of exceptions of course, as many camo colors & schemes were experimented with, but those are the two general classic colors

Will I be a heretic if I paint them in good old Brown Violet? (Ducks)

GrossKaliefornja05 Jan 2010 5:44 p.m. PST

Brown Violet is just a shade of OD.

By now I've seen approximately 50 government issued color standards of OD issued between 1918 & 1968, and it's a wide color range occupying at least several NBS centroids(theoretically tens of thousands of colors). OD standards range from a deep brown, medium khaki brown, medium khaki green, dark geenish brown (that can be either green or brown depending on the light type), dark greyish green to dark greyish greeny green.
