Remembering Marx WOW Figures

If you were a kid in the 1960s who loved history and toy soldiers, you probably had a WOW figure!

Hi, who makes a good selection of 28-mm Japanese peasants and or warrior monks? I'm looking for about 20 figures to fill out one of my samurai armies for a house rule set of mine that is set from 1550-1615.

Are the Perry Miniatures worth considering? I do have a unit of samurai cavalry from them and plan on buying two more 12 man cavalry units and a samurai general. The figures painted up fine, but I was looking for a little more variety than the single packs of figures they produce. Or should I bother with Old Glory?

I was hoping The Assault Group might make some warrior monk infantry in their range, but all they have is cavalry (I think). I just need another 20 man infantry unit…

Any help is a appreciated,
Thanks,

The Perry figures are well worth considering. If you are looking for a unit of monks there are the packs of armed monks but there are also the packs of Ikko-Ikki to consider. Some of the figures from the Ikko-Ikki packs could also be mixed with the peasants instead. I'd think there is enough variety in there to make a pretty decent unit of 20 figures if that is what you are looking for.

Come to think of it, you could probably also include a couple of figs from the village and town people packs and use the rest as civilians.

Blake: You hit me on my favorite subject Warrior Monks. My opinion is The Assault Group has the best range of Monks out there. TAG has mounted monks, monks with naginata, and monks with bows. They also have lightly armored followers which in a pinch can double as villagers, that is besides two sets of villagers with all types of weapons. TAG is where I started my Monk Army and I'm still adding to it. Kingsford, Perry , and 1st Corps also have monks which will mix well. Hope I was of some help. TIG

Old Glory has some as well.

I like the Perry figures. So I'm inclined to go with the Perry warrior monks and peasants. I just need one more infantry unit. And I do like the warrior monks (sohei), but they're fanatical units in my house rules. So I don't know if I want an entire army of fanatics charging or advancing forward at once because they got to close to the enemy!

However, the peasant levy is just arrow fodder in my game.

They basically stand there and wonder what the hell they are doing on the battlefield! And there's a good chance they'll rout and flee the table if they're charged in combat. But they'd be a welcome addition to all the Clan War samurai that I have…

The PERRY ENTHUSIASTS usually come out ahead in anything to do with Samurai. The Warrior Monk people like TAG because of the wide range of various figures. Two packs of TAG Warrior Monk infantry gives you 16 figures with 8 different poses. I plan to add the Perry Monks after the first of the year. They will be six of about 50 in my Monk army.

I use a mix of all three manufacturers:

Curtley Miniatures in the Sung Chinese line has Peasants, and Rabble that would work. See links:

The Curtey pirates may also fit as armed peasants.

Joekano, those are nicely done!

I think cost-wise, I'll go with the Old Glory Warrior Monks. I do love the Perry Armed Peasants, Ikko-ikki warriors, and villagers. But I can't afford to buy them all right now. So I'll mail ordering some German East Africa troops with my Old Glory order when I sent it out at the end of December. But I'd still like to buy a unit of peasants for my samurai house rules…

BTW, the pictures of the figures are well done.

Thanks Guys! The Old Glory figures are good for the price (they are about 2/3s of the unit pictured). The only downside is they have no command figures, so you'd have to modify if you want any banners.

We now stock Kingsford Miniatures' Sengoku Jidai range if you want to add some variety. I'm adding them to my Perry Miniatures samurai army. I've also mixed in some Black Hat miniatures.

Steve: First, Happy Holidays. How do the Kingsford mounted figures look next to the Perry mounted? My standing TAG monks are noticibly smaller than the Kingsford. I have them really spread from each other so the size difference doesn't show like a group of giants. But, I really do like the figures and plan to add the next group of monks when available. TIG

Sorry for the delay Tigrifsgt. The Perry and Kingsford cavalry are very compatible. I will be mixing mine together. I'll try and get some comparison photos on the website in the near future.
