I am just starting in the period, and am still working out colars. The one recommended by battlefront is a lot darker than I remeber any of my old cotton uniforms ever being. I joined some years after the war, but it was pretty much the same uniform I believe.

The darker green looks more like the permenent Press that replaced the cotton. Anybody have any suggestions? I thought that this would not be a hard period to start, haveing personel experience with much of the gear, but it is proving a bit more elusive than I had expected.

It didnt just fade in Vietnam, it faded after one or two washings right here in the states.

One thing I noticed is the slant top pocket uniform looks like it was dyed darker then the straight top pocket one. The only example I have is my dads straight top pocket shirt from when he was in 67-69. I need to look at it to color compare.

I use Vallejo's US Uniform green.

Bluish greyish green should work. Maybe some olive ones for the green horns.

Using help from TMP, the Vietgaming Yahoo group, and by comparing my paints to the heap of actual equipment and uniform bits that I have, I came up with the folowing for my Britannia 20mm US Army figs:

Base Uniform – Vallejo 890 Reflective Green, drybrushed with a 50/50 mix of 890/886 Green Grey, followed by more drybrushing of lightened mix of above.

Packs and Web gear – Val 893 US Dark Green, drybrushed with a 40/60 mix of 893/886, followed by another drybrushing of a lightened mix.

Helmet with Mitchel Pattern camo – base color- 50/50mix of Val 891 Intermediate green/967 Olive with the following camo splotches; 50/50 val 891/892 Dark olive, Val 892 dark olive, Val 826 Cam Med Brown.

I found that I could not get a base color for the helmet that seemed "perfect' with the Vallejo paints (I probably tried a 100 or so evolutions of mixes), but looking at the fig from 10 inches away, the above gave a resonable representation.

I also made some uniforms and gear a little more faded than others by adding a touch of white/light grey/and or grey green to the colors as I went along.

The colors that I initially mixed, the "Base" colors above, were efforts to match uniform and equipment colors that had seen little wear or few washings.

I used black for my VC with gear generally colored to that of my PAVN forces.

I used the same sources for my PAVN troops, but had much less in the way of actual equipment/uniforms to work with:

Base Uniform – Modelmaster Forest Green, drybrushed with lightened MM For. Grn.

Webgear/packs – Vallejo Russian Uniform Green w/Val 886 Green-Grey drybrushing.

Other Equipment – Val 894 Russian Grn

I think my PAVN colors deviated a little from some of the online sources and suggestions, but I used actual equipment as my primary source and recommendations and books second. Hope this might be of some help.

I've found GW Gnarlak Green to be a pretty good base color, highlighted with Vallejo Grey Green.

Thanks all for the help. Colars indeed, thats what I get for posting after a solstice glass or two.
