Well, I got my Titan Marines from Rebel Minis and decided to test out a few paint schemes to see how they would look. In total I planed to do four test schemes with the set of 22 minis, Desert, German inspired Camouflage, Grey (like Jin Roh or Panzer Corp from Japan), and maybe something GI Joe inspired since they remind me of COBRA soldiers. I got the first two test schemes done last week and took some pictures to see what you guys think. I really think the miniatures stand out well and there is a lot more detail than appears at first glance. The style seems to be a mix between the German inspired armor seen in Jin Roh with a little touch of Samurai in the kabuto styled helmet. My wife, who is NOT a SciFi fan, stated they reminded her of Star Wars since the helmets looked like Vader's (his was based on the kabuto style of Samurai helmets). Once you add some paint these guys will look perfect in either a near future war setting, post apocalyptic or even Weird World War II as evidenced in some of my pictures. Overall, so great minis and if you hurry and order some, Rebel Minis is running a 20% off sale until the December 31st. Mike has also stated that there will be heavy weapons and support teams for these guys in February or so of next year when his sculptor has time to do them.

In regards to the actual painting, I normally pick a spray paint for the primer that is also a main color I want on the mini to save some painting. I them block in the various colors I need and add a few highlights on occasion. Next I typically use Army Painter Strong Tone or Dark Tone depending on the base colors or a wash using Future (if a special color is needed). Once the "Dip" has dried, I often use some GW Badab Black wash (sometime thinned) to make another pass over guns and to do a little black lining where I want a darker shadow. The minis are all then subjected to a matte varnish, normally Dullcoat. I mount all the minis on ¾ inch washers and use a mix of flock, ballast, sand and static grass to cover the bases. Since I use magnet lined cases, the minis stay put for travel. Below is a fairly inclusive list of all the colors I used on the minis and how I used them. For the woodland camouflage I was trying to use only colors readily available in the German Vallejo box done for FoW so that it was easier to get all the colors. I also thought it might appeal more to FoW players thinking about doing some WWWII games and would show off how the Titan Marines could fit into such a role. I added a few shoulder markings to the desert scheme for some color (suggested by Mark of Dropship Horizon) and may eventually go back and do something similar to the woodland troopers. I hope the minis are a bit better presented than my previous pictures; I have been trying to get better lighting and playing with finding the proper white balance on my camera.

Have a great night,

Jeff

Titan Marine Pant Scheme Supplies:

Temperate Woodland Camo. Pattern Marines
German Inspired Camouflage (Tried to use colors from the FOW German Paint Set)

Krylon Camouflage 4291 Khaki Spary Paint (Primer / Basecoat)
Vallejo 70821 German Camo. Beige (Almost exact match to Khaki Spary Paint – used for touchups)
Vallejo 70984 Flat Brown (Camo Pattern on armor pads and helmet)
Vallejo 70890 Reflective Green (Camo Pattern on armor pads and helmet)
Vallejo 70830 German Field Grey (Gas mask, collar guard, shoes/boots)
Vallejo 822 S.S. Camo. Black (Knee pads/armor)
Vallejo 50 Cold Grey (Rifle)
Vallejo 908 Carmine Red (Eye pieces)
Army Painter Strong Tone (Painted on the mini)
GW Badab Black Wash (Thinned coat over figure after Army Painted has dried. Standard coat over the rifle.)
Figures Dullcoated after paint has dried (Matte Sealer Spray)

Notes:
- It appears that the entire mini has a camouflage pattern, but it is really only the armor pads and helmet. The army painter gave the base coat a darker brown color that makes it appear to be camouflaged.
- I wanted these minis to work for near future Sci-Fi and Weird WWII, so I used German colors mostly available in the FOW German paint set so that others could find them easier.

Sorry, meant to cross post to SciFi Painting Guides. I have a cold and need to head to bed. I also wanted to thank Mark of Dropship Horizon and Cacique Caribe for their feedback on the early pictures I did of these guys. Much appreciated.

Hope you guys enjoy the pictures.

Jeff

Great work as always, Jeff. I especially like the desert camo troops. It's a very effect color scheme and really brings out the detail in the figures.

Great looking minis you got there. I'll have to add those to my ever growing list of goodies to get soon. I liked the sci-fi buildings you made too.

Only criticism is that they are camo and I CAN'T SEE THEM!!!!

Great job!

JRacel22 Dec 2009 5:37 a.m. PST

Thanks a lot guys, glad you like them. Just a little note, the desert guys troopers are not in a camouflage pattern, just painted in the appropriate colors using a desert tan base with armor plates of a slightly darker color. grin

I liked the sci-fi buildings you made too.

I have a group of buildings I made from electrical boxes and some GZG "building fittings". I will get some pictures of them up in the next few days.
