Ive read the two previous threads on this one. The last being in 2006, I think. Any new suggestions for Leman Russ tank substitutes? The GW one does nothing for me.

I'll consider anything tracked, SF, NF, or retro-SF (but not VSF) looking. I'm not too much of a converter so I'm leaving out the 1/35 and 1/48 plastic modern models ideas for the moment.

Also, I'm currently using the Pig Iron and Old Crow tanks for 2 other guard regiments, so those are out.

Ideas Mates?

Vickers MkII Medium and the Vickers Independant Heavy tanks from Copplestone's Back of Beyond range are pretty retro.

I'm currently working on that(go to page11/12 for current pics, as it has evolved considerably since I first posted the design up there).

Hope to have it in production by summer, and it's being DESIGNED as a leman russ substitute, so it'll have most/all weapon options and hopefully the finished piece will mesh in well with existing GW minis.

Very nice Chaos! How much will it likely run and where will you be selling it?

chaos0xomega19 Dec 2009 1:45 p.m. PST

No clue on cost, aiming to keep it under 30 USD, but ultimately its going to depend on production method (hoping I can go for plastic-injection), and how much interest there is from the general gaming/modeling community, the more people willing to buy, the cheaper it will be.

As for where I will be selling it, initially online, but once I figure out how to distribute, any hobby shop that uses the major distributors.

There's always the Mortian Heavy Tank:

I really like the model, but it's a bit expensive

Me likey! ;-)

"No clue on cost, aiming to keep it under 30 USD"

If its anywhere in the $30's, you can count me in for at least 3 (to begin with).

Cheers.

The Mortian Heavy Tank is too big to be a LR replacement. It's closer to the Baneblade superheavies. It actually resembles some of the newer tanks FW designed for the DKOK.

You say that the Mortian is too big… I (and Mort) say the Leman Russ is too small. Besides that, both my design and his design fit pretty well with the other races vehicles. The monolith is massive, I dont even remember the dimensions anymore, but its over 8" high. The Land Raider is fairly big as well. A wive serpent is 7" long, and about 4" wide from the tip to tip. The Tau Hammerhead is about 6-&" long and about 3" wide.

ha ha ha

and with the line of sight rules in the current edition all that size is not a good thing. If your the size of a house, you can be seen from anywhere of the table, and then shot. The russ is too tall, with to narrow a turret ring already.

Other than the single cannon and the exposed bogie wheels, the Mortian is almost a direct copy of the Forgeworld Macharius Vanquisher:

What happened to GZG's vehicle line?

Delta Vee20 Dec 2009 10:22 a.m. PST

GZG had problems getting the right resin at a resonable price, ( if i remeber correctly) and thus the line is currently on hold, They have said they may re-open it when they get back round to 25mm after the current 15mm runs, but its dependent on things.
And no dought John or some one from GZG will be along presently yo give the offical and far far more accurate version. :)
though if your reading this John please please start doing them again.

Uesugi Kenshin: Here's a picture of some Mortian tanks with Leman Russes and Chimeras

But the tank is too expensive if you are aiming for $30. USD It costs like $77 USD each :\

chironex21 Dec 2009 12:15 a.m. PST

GZG can still be gotten through Eureka. I don't think it really fits though.
Armorcast?

Otherwise WW2 KVs are also popular replacements.
T-35 maybe?

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP21 Dec 2009 1:07 a.m. PST

A T-80 hull with a more SF turret might be a choice as well. Thnx for pics above guys.

I have also been pondering an Leman Russ alternative. I have the additional complication of having both a 40K force and am Epic force that are mirrors of each other.

So what ever vehicle I'm looking for muct be found in 6mm and 28mm.

At the momment my favorite alternative is the British Churchill tabk. It has track system that is similar in style to 40K vehicles. With a replacement turrent it may work.
