I got a blog where I´m describing my efforts to play This Accursed Civil War from the Musket and Pike series by GMT Games using 6mm Baccus miniatures instead of counters.

Anyone else doing this or something similar?

Here is the blog, lots of pictures over there:

Not for this, but my goal is to do 1/300 moderns using Lock N' Load's Blood & Bridges series.

I like your effort! I'd gladly play it.

Very nice blog – its good to see the figures go from bare metal to battle report.

I think there is a lot of potential for hex based wargames personally. I'm a fan of boardgames myself and to my mind there is a lot that wargames could take from them with regard to rules, game design, quality and playability.

I made myself a hex mat a couple of months ago but unfortunately have had a busy time since then so it has just been rolled up in the garage. Next year I want to do something with a boardgame/wargame cross over but until then I'll happily read about other peoples' efforts :-)

Thank guys, I´m glad my little blog is being enjoyed.

Crusaderminis, I agree that there is potential in a mix/crossbreed between the genres. Hex based games have so many advantages, but it´s nice to play them with miniatures. 6mm is perfect for this.

You made your own hex mat? How did you go about that if I may ask? A hex template perhaps?

Radius:
Fantastic. I'm coming around to the hex game view myself. I prefer larger figures so I want games that handle that. I'm very fond of the C&C ancients model. I'm looking forward to the Napoleonic version later in 2010. Please post more as you work on Newbury.

I agree with Crusaderminis. Board wargames have a lot of potential for conversion to miniatures. Especially the tactical ones. Like your blog. I want to try the same type of game you have produced but with 2mm miniatures.

"You made your own hex mat? How did you go about that if I may ask? A hex template perhaps?"

A friend of mine gave me a 6 foot by 8 foot felt cloth he was never going to use so I made a template out of cardboard and simply drew around it with a green marker pen. After that I sprayed the mat with various green/brown/tan paint to take away some of the 'brightness'.

I used 4" hexes as I would like to be able to use small units of 15mm figures and everything I have now is based up on 40mm wide bases. Two units of 2 bases each can fit in line or column quite easily.

The only thing that doesnt quite work with board wargames is when you try to have multiple players per side. With a few exceptions board wargames tend to have game mechanics designed for 2 players and you can see straight away that these would leave various players standing about doing nothing for a good portion of any game.

Al and Ravachol: I thought briefly about using 2mm, and while I might very well be persuaded otherwise in the future, I think the 2mm are not yet eye-pleasing enough.

Crusaderminis: Thanks for tip on making your own hex mat. About multiplayer I would say it depends on the system. Musket and Pike is highly interactive, with many actions and reactions. So even with more than two players, it is fun and everyone around the table is kept busy. As noted in my blog, we were four players at the Edgehill game and it worked very well.

Radius,

You should pick up a few 2mm figs from Irregular. They are really quite nice.

I´d be happy to buy from Irregular once they get a Paypal account. The thought of sending my credit card info in two separate emails gives me the chills. Too bad as they have a lot that interests me. About scales, I´ve have already walked too far down the 6mm road, so 2mm will have to wait. Maybe for my next project?
