Hi guys,

I am looking for a 28mm tank to use with my Warzone Imperial trencher army. I want to continue the WWI theme of the Trenchers and am looking for suitable WWI tanks in 28mm that I can add sci fi equipment too. Do you have any suggestions?

These links may give some ideas of the theme I'm aiming for:

Thanks as always for any advice.

I thought that was what GW's Landraiders were!

I too was going to recommend Brigade games. I think they make a St.Chamond too that has a big gun poking out the front.

"Ain't cheap though"

Well that is relative. The casting is beyond superb on the Mark IV, Mark V, A7V, St Chammond and Schneider that I would recommend for the project. The fact that the masters were very expensive to have done by some of the best vehicle sculptors in the business (and they are accurate and to scale) and the molding and casting is the best in the business it will take me several more years to break even on these (on average 3 years of sales.) I did them to support my range of miniatures and because I wanted to see some fantastic models on the market.

I promise not to change any codex to make them obsolete though. wink

McLovin10 Dec 2009 10:05 a.m. PST

Thanks for the suggestion Connard. You're right, Those are fantastic looking models. Think i've found what i'm looking for.

Cheers,

Chris.

Can't ask for more than that.

It was an observation, not a criticism Lon. If I wanted WWI tanks I'd buy yours regardless. They are rather nice.

There you go, another sale grin

Have you thought about Westwind Production's Secret of the Third Reich range?:

They look like they'd fit the bill quite well…maybe add a few extra weapons…

Skrapwelder10 Dec 2009 11:31 a.m. PST

Conversion of one of the West wind vehicles I did for VSF. Nice kit to work with.

They're also very nice. The right style and a bit more leaning towards sci fi, which is what I was after. Now it's decison making time.

Thanks.

Very nice Skrapwelder. Thanks for sharing the pics.

I just wish they were done in 15mm sizes with all that detail! Great models.

Jakar Nilson10 Dec 2009 11:52 a.m. PST

Mike Surely means Leman Russ tanks, as Land Raiders have looked high-tech since 3rd Edition.

But anyways, it's rather easy to build you own tank out of foamcore or cardboard.

dandiggler10 Dec 2009 12:07 p.m. PST

OG also does some of the same WWI tanks with a bit less detail (and cheaper w/ the army card), which seem prime for conversions. I have the St. Chamond (late model), and it seems to me you could do a ton of conversion on it.

I'd go with the foamcore and card route as well.

here's what you want:

The Vickers MkII Medium tank. First real MBT with traversing turret. Too bad it was oboslete by the time 1939 came around. I think Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Company does a model of it.

Colin Hagreen10 Dec 2009 1:22 p.m. PST

Copplestone?

Bottom of the page, products K50 – Vickers Medium Mk III – and K51 – Vickers Independent.

crhkrebs10 Dec 2009 1:35 p.m. PST

The tanks sold by Lon are awesome. However they are very symbolic of WW1, especially the Mark V and the Whippet from the second photo link. To me, they are too easily identifiable as real tanks. The St. Chamond looks just weird enough to be a Sci-Fi tank.

I would agree with Wulfric and look at the Copplestone tanks. They are not as well known. The Vickers Heavy tank actually looks like a Sci-Fi tank to me.

All of the models are beautiful…..heck buy them all!

Hey, McLovin!

I hope you are not stealing my scenario idea. I was going to post this exact same topic in a month or two.

Does your game include a hot air balloon, a ferris wheel, a Plinko board, and the armed warrior frogs from Eureka Miniatures?

Jeff at JTFM Enterprises10 Dec 2009 3:15 p.m. PST

"and the molding and casting is the best in the business"

I'll take that as a compliment Lon!

I think the Schnieder would work as an SF APC with a bit of tweaking.

Jeff

Jamesonsafari10 Dec 2009 3:53 p.m. PST

Oh my! those Copplestone tanks really need to be added to my VSF Indian forces. Of course I think the Brigade games St. Chamond does too…

I have the Brigade Whippet, yet unpainted.
It is THE loveliest resin casting I have ever seen.
I may never paint it, since I get so much pleasure just looking at the resin.

Baconfat10 Dec 2009 9:33 p.m. PST

Old Glory (oldglory25s.com or oldgloryminiatures.com) have a fair amount of mid to lower priced WWI tanks.

I bought the Mark (can't remember the nomenclature) British tank. It's a terrific mold and has assecories and both male and female weapon options. It's to scale, so it won't be a big fat thing like the old GW Landraider.

McLovin11 Dec 2009 2:35 a.m. PST

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. Certainly given me plenty of food for thought.

Regards

Chris

Thanks for the tips, those are some nice tanks…

I've got me a 1/35 scale Whippet from Emhar to convert into a veritable "land ironclad". I believe it's an OOP model these days. Here's a oldish review of the kit (it's not know to be very easy to assemble, which is why I haven't started mine):

Oh, but the original would work just fine, especially if you avoided all the shiney 40k paint schemes. A grubby old "mud" camo scheme with the Capitol symbol prominent. Makes me wish I had one of those old things now.

I have the Copplestone Vickers Medium – very nice vehicle, great molding, easy to built – in real life, it did not see much action, but there was a time when Vickers Mediums were the most commonly produced medium tank in the world

I use it with my British infantry in tropical kit – it's last action on the table was as a support vehicle for US Marines in a Mexican Revolution game

ChrisGermanicus12 Dec 2009 6:47 a.m. PST

Back in the Imperial sourcebook, one of the Imperial armoured vehicles was the "Bauhaus Bully" which looks a bit like an M-109 on steroids:

picture

I never knew if I should be amazed or baffled by the design.

One could scratchbuild it using either existing 1/35 kits (given that the Trencher figures are a bulky bunch, IIRC) or a GW chimera as a basis.

Your "picture" took me to a error page then a youtube link and I had to shut my system down to get out of it.

Hmm, sorry about that, although I donīt know why this should be; checked the original picture (found via Google) again, and it works OK here, no alarms from either McAfee Enterprise, Adblock Plus, SiteAdvisor or NoScript.

I uploaded it to my Photobucket account, now it should work out:

Man, those Brigade Games WWI tanks look absolutely spectacular. I may have to start building some late WWI armies…
