As I noted
when you play the giant monster games do you match the stats to the fig, play with proxy (my giant ape is actually a robot ape with rocket launchers etc.), or do you not care and use anything? And please do not mention little plastic bricks for city parts
I am hoping to leave that whole mess with the other thread. I am curious in regards to the giant monster games that do not make their own miniatures, if you choose or make a monster that does not look just like a famous and there for available miniature/figure then you are out of luck. So what so you and your players do to work around this issue? |

Aren't the majority of the kaiju games meant to allow play with the various "real" kaiju toys from Japan? |
| Space Monkey | 08 Dec 2009 6:31 p.m. PST |
Mostly I use Bandai models and plastic Kaiju monsters
but I've made a few things with sculpey
and also some of the larger lead minis, like that big old RAFM Cthulhu and dhole. What are those robot animal kit/toys with tiny riders called? My friend has lots of those he's painted up and used in our games. |
| 28mmMan | 08 Dec 2009 6:48 p.m. PST |
Farstar, yes the majority of the giant monster games seem to be established to allow for the play with existing monsters from film/media
but they all allow for creating your own monsters, which is where I was going with the thought
if you as the player were to create a monster, what figure would you use if it did not look just like an existing monster? More of a "do you settle" or "do you make something else work" kinda question :) |

One monster I wish there was a cheap model/toy version of is Yog: Monster From Space. picture There are toys of him but they all seem to go for a lot of cash
and my attempts to model one have been less than successful. I've got some rubber squids and octopi but it ain't the same

I use Bandai figures myself, but I'm open to using other stuff. |

Venus
what would you say Yog's giant squid height is? 40-60'? I suspect you want it for giant monster gaming so in a 5-6" size. It would be a fun one to be sure. |

I have a huge collection of 4" toys and stat them out accordingly for who they are. And just because
including slight variations between all of the different gojira suits that reflect powers in the movie(s) when that suit was used. I also use a number of non-historical toys and stat them according to how they look. Since I run most of my kaiju games at Anime Boston, these are mostly kaiju-sized flying catgirls with BFGs. I will do close substitutions. I have an RKO King Kong and have the stats ready to use as the RKO version, and also for the Toho version. But I wouldn't use it for Mecha Kong. Eventually, I might have to break down and convert or scratch build a Mecha Kong since I haven't found anything close in ~4" yet. A few years ago, I played in a game at GenCon that only used the figures as generic markers and the stats did not line up with the figures at all. No attempt was made to match any of the stats to the figures. That was very disconcerting and disappointing. Mothra does not breathe fire :( |

Venusboys3 I have a ton of Bandai Gashapons for Kaiju Games. I play with 3-4 inch figures. I have been collecting for some time, so I have figures for almost everything. I really do mean everything. (incluging Yog) The Yog figure that I have was part of the Iwakura collection. (3-4 inches)
Ebay has Kameba, Ganime and others. Just search under "Godzilla Iwakura" Yog shows up on a regular basis. The unfortunate part is that the figures were released in color and black and white. The B/W versions are the ones that usually show up on Ebay. |

Great responses, thanks! I suspected that there were three types of kaiju players: 1. loyalty players, blue bloods that want to bring heroes and villains of various media to life ala a historical gamers mentality (in some small degree :) 2. creative players, those Bob Ross's who paint happy little kaiju and like to play for the A-Z creative process 3. anything players, those who will play anything "hey a piece of candy, ooo a piece a candy, etc.) and do not care if there is any relation of the paper monster to the plastic monster I am certainly in the #2 group. As much as I like the kaiju I am not a loyalist, needing/wanting to play the classic monsters
though I would if the situation presented itself (convention, pick up game, etc.)
(side thought)
The Yog
I have not seen that movie in a very long time, but a google search refreshed my memory
there are three monsters in that movie
is Yog the space goo that makes the monster squid, turtle, and crab/lobster or one of the monsters in particular? |
| Mad Dog | 09 Dec 2009 10:52 a.m. PST |
Krakenoctus from Monsterpocalypse Now would make a passing Yog, I think. |

Thieses, I think I've seen the Yog you're referring to
it's nice, and I would prefer black and white so I can paint it myself
but IIRC that figure is in a kind of diorama
fighting another monster with no way to cleanly separate them (tentacles are all wrapped around it). 28mmMan, Yog is probably the space goo itself but from what I can tell the giant squid is the one who has ended up attached to the name
so yeah, I mean the squid
it's big but not quite up to Godzilla's size. Krakenoctus is pretty cool, but not squiddy enough for my Yog
but I want one nonetheless. |
| Farstar | 09 Dec 2009 12:36 p.m. PST |
For reference, that is a submarine in one of Krackenoctus' tentacles. |
| Thieses | 09 Dec 2009 3:41 p.m. PST |
venusboys3 you are correct. There is a Yog diorama with all three monsters collectively based together. The figures I have are from an earlier Iwakura set that had the creatures individually packaged (except the turtle it was a chase piece) I fit into category 1,2 I have a lot of minis, but I have also constructed and painted bunch as proxies. I found some pics! picture picture picture Here is a link to pics of most of the Iwakura figure sets. link |

yep, that's the very nice KaijuZoo paint job on a Marmit vinyl kit
10 inches tall and 150 bucks. I think I'll opt for the 3.5 inch version that's only 9 bucks
|
| 28mmMan | 10 Dec 2009 11:46 a.m. PST |
$150 USD or $9 USD that is quite a scale shift! Did you find one for $9? |
| Space Monkey | 10 Dec 2009 12:11 p.m. PST |
Also a big shift in size. The cheaper one is on Ebay. auction |
| 28mmMan | 10 Dec 2009 12:24 p.m. PST |
$3 USD shipping? Insane in the membrane. Good find my friend. Are you looking at these also? auction auction auction and more
good stuff. |

28mmMan, I have the Gamera, and the Destroyer Crab figures in that post. They are very cool, and super detailed. If you need a Gamera, that is one of my favorite sculpts. I highly recommend that figure. |
| 28mmMan | 10 Dec 2009 2:29 p.m. PST |
They both look quite nice
a bit of edge to them both. |

I run Giant Monster Rampage for my Friday night RPG group when we take a break. I have all sort of actions figures I use as Kaiju. But luckily back in the early 90's Toys R Us had a anniversary monster pack with a bunch of Godzilla monster in it. So I have a bunch of movie monsters statted out with "close to movie" powers. I say close as except with a few monsters like my Godzilla 2000 or Space Godzilla figures, most are representative of a movie monster but not specific to one movie. |
