Although I'm not really much of a painter, I've recently looked at and photo'd a comparison of some wash/shade products – Army Painter, the CA one and GW washes. Its on my blog here

I have had good fun with coloured furniture varnish from DIY stores – it has helped me to finish off a lot of figures that have been laying around for years…

I have used all three in the same shades. I think the Cotes D'Armes product wins over the AP one for convenience (AP is messy!) and I am going with that for my Warlord ECW project. The test regiment is almost done and I am really pleased with the results.

I have used AP wnd Matt Varnish on some WW2 US figures and the results were OK but GW Devlan Mud gave better results as an overall wash.

The GW washes are brilliant but using one shade in the same manner as CA or AP is expensive and using each shade on a different area of the figure (I have used this method for alot of ACW figs) sort of negates the speed factor.

Yeah, DIY store stain Varnish is similar to army painter but cheaper and, at least in the case of the Homebase own brand one i have, water based.

I used it on a bunch of Necrons over a chrome spray and it did a good job. I brushed it on but i might brave a "dip" approach to see how that works out, as that will be a heck of a lot quicker.

I use homebrew superwash on my 15mm at the moment, made with floor polish and Windsor and Newton inks, but i have the CD washes and they are pretty good, though i prefer the homebrew as you can control the viscosity by varying the mix. It "runs" better for what i want in 15mm.

The Vallejo washes are excellent.

Hi Stewbags,
Whats the name of the DIY store varnish that you use and which shade of army painter does it compare to?

Also I tried to use the CD arms shades but just could not get them to flow like the AP ones, probably should have tried useing my left hand.

The AP ones are terrific though…

MinWax has excellent acrylic stains, and they come in 72 shades. I'll not use anything else again.

I think a lot depends on whether the "mess and fuss" of non-water-soluble stuff puts you off. For me its a slight turn-off because I dont really like having white spirits etc in the workroom, so theres a separate stage, moving figures from indoors to garage etc. Not a big deal but makes me inclined to like the water-soluble answers.

The UK store Homebase. it is a chocolate colour i think, so the darkest AP would be a rough approximation. I am pretty sure it is an acrylic varnish and as such is water soluble. I deffo washed the brush with water but have not looked at it recently to see if it is now trashed.

I intent to revisit the minis and touch them up with another wash and various pin washes to get an oily and corroded finish. I may pin wash with CA washes as well to add contrast on the metalic areas. I have gone with red as the non metallic contrasting colour I am going to use, as this works well with a brown based wash as well.

Here is the range of acrylic stains that MinWax makes. I really like them.
