I am just about to paint some 28mm cuirassiers. They are wearing gloves and the back of the hand and wrists are clearly armoured. I am assuming that the palms must be leather.

Has anyone seen a photo of such gloves? Can you confirm that the palms are indeed leather? Or fabric? Or whatever?

Yes, most gauntlets only cover the back of the hand and fingers. They are usually sewn to the glove.
