Not really but I miss reading the polls, the comments and the results, as unreliable as they may be.

Sterling Moose21 Nov 2009 6:02 a.m. PST

Me too.

Need new TMP. Old TMP too fat. Editor writing new TMP and not polls.

We need a poll on this.

Waco Joe21 Nov 2009 8:18 a.m. PST

I suggest the following poll:

"without seeing it, and with absolutely no facts upon which to base my opinion, the new TMP is:

A. Worse than the old TMP
B. About the same as the old TMP
C. Better than the old TMP"

Then we can do a pre new TMP poll and a post new TMP poll and compare results. I betcha there is a Master's thesis in Sociology in there somewhere.

Baggy Sausage21 Nov 2009 8:33 a.m. PST

We need a poll on this every week.

nazrat21 Nov 2009 9:09 a.m. PST

Yeah, somebody's going to pop with all that bitchin' energy left inside. Quick, start a thread on GW or FoW!! 8)=

Steve Hazuka21 Nov 2009 11:51 a.m. PST

I'm going to contact the ACLU and tell them my right to vote has been taken away!

Baggy Sausage21 Nov 2009 1:33 p.m. PST

We need a poll on this every week.

Martin Rapier21 Nov 2009 1:53 p.m. PST

I'm sure there will be a bazillion polls when the new site is up and running.

Sterling Moose21 Nov 2009 3:33 p.m. PST

How about a new board to discuss whether we need the polls back?

Cpt Arexu21 Nov 2009 4:17 p.m. PST

When does TMP move to Baltimore? I like pie.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP21 Nov 2009 5:42 p.m. PST

Do we have a poll on pie yet ?

We'll soon weed out all those ticking "Not a pie eater"

raducci21 Nov 2009 7:33 p.m. PST

Can I get a clarification, please?
What is it exactly you Americans call "pie"? Is it cake?
I finally worked out "cookies" are biscotti.
I'd always thought they were Dagwood Bumstead's wife.

Cpt Arexu21 Nov 2009 7:52 p.m. PST

Blondie was Dagwood Bumstead's wife, Cookie was their daughter.

Catch up!

Cpt Arexu21 Nov 2009 8:01 p.m. PST

1) The cake is a lie.

2) As for pie, I'll go with this definition from wikipedia (ca. 11/21/09, 16:57 Hawaiian time):
"A pie is a baked dish which is usually made of a pastry dough shell that covers or completely contains a filling of various sweet or savoury ingredients. Pies can be either "filled", where a dish is covered by pastry and the filling is placed on top of that, "top-crust," where the filling is placed in a dish and covered with a pastry/potato mash top before baking, or "two-crust," with the filling completely enclosed in the pastry shell. Pies can be a variety of sizes, ranging from bite-size to ones designed for multiple servings.

Reference to "pyes" as food items appeared in England (in a Latin context) as early as the 12th Century, but no unequivocal reference to the item with which the article is concerned is attested in the Oxford English Dictionary until the 14th century (Oxford English Dictionary sb pie)."

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pie

3) Biscotti are the vestigial remnants of twice-baked ships' biscuit, important chow for the oarsmen on galleys, according to Guilmartin's "Gunpowder and Galleys".

I suppose you can trace SOME cookies to that lineage, but I'd think you could also link them to other types of baked goods as well.

And I've got too much time on my hands.

Rob UK22 Nov 2009 12:21 a.m. PST

Surely EVERYBODY likes pies so such a poll would be nonesense. Now perhaps a poll on what kind of pie….that would work.

@ Capitano Arexu so "pie" is torte!
And, poor fellow, from your poor definition of biscotti, you clearly have never sampled them.
There's a package of home-made ones in the post for you.
Enjoy.

Cpt Arexu22 Nov 2009 9:14 a.m. PST

I think of them mostly as sweet hardtack, based on the samples I've been given over the years…

Martin Rapier23 Nov 2009 6:53 a.m. PST

"Capitano Arexu so "pie" is torte!"

Sort of, although I'd call a torte a tart in English (ie the pastry is only on the bottom). A proper pie has pastry on top as well. I can't think of an Italian dish which is the equivalent, although in Spain they have Empanada, maybe in Italy too? It is a tuna pie.

I'll be in Venice in three weeks and will no doubt find the shops stuffed with Italian pies. Bringing my wellingtons at this time of year.

richarDISNEY23 Nov 2009 10:28 a.m. PST

Please Bill. Just one. One. That will keep the masses acquiesced…
beer

dafrca23 Nov 2009 5:10 p.m. PST

I have to admit I had a great time reading this thread. :-)

raducci23 Nov 2009 11:18 p.m. PST

Torta della nonna is very common, all over Italy.
It has pastry top and bottom over a filling of egg yolk, ricotta and sugar with vanilla flavouring (and sometimes lemon).
The mame means Granny's pie and my Nonna makes a great one.
Buon appetito.

BravoX30 Nov 2009 4:39 a.m. PST

"Torta della nonna is very common, all over Italy."
So are tarts in the UK grin.

DeanMoto21 Dec 2009 6:12 p.m. PST

Is the moratorium over?

raducci27 Dec 2009 5:58 p.m. PST

Polls seem to have been poleaxed permanently.
