There was a brief discussion on another thread as to what is or is not a standard scale for wargming. 54mm was specifically discussed as being a niche scael for warming. I thought it might make an interesting poll topic, so here we are. Do you think 54mm is a niche wargaming scale? |
| thosmoss | 17 Nov 2009 8:13 a.m. PST |
It's a niche hobby, any sub-category by definition has to be a niche. Have to admit, 54mm is easier to find at WalMart than 28mm. |

Define "niche". What is the maximum percentile for it to be considered "niche"? |

I can not remember the last I've seen a game done in 54mm whether it was at someone's home, the local store, or any of the Midwest conventions to which I've been. |

With Victrix doing there 28mm plastics in 54mm things could be changing. |

Yes, 54mm is a niche scale, just like 2mm, 3mm, 40mm, 18mm and, dare I say it, 10/12mm and anything else which isn't one of the big four. The big four being 6mm, 15mm, 20mm and 28mm. Yes I know they aren't scales. I do actually have some 54mm stuff and I have played some games with it, but not for many decades now (the old Paragon WW2 skirmish rules). |

What "scale" are the classic Green and Tan army men used for Combat Storm games? Is that 54mm? link |

According to the 'Army Men Homepage' they are between 1/25th and 1/35th. 54mm is 1/30th. thortrains.net/armymen |

Shrug! Hell if I know. I am just making this up as I go along. |

54mm is the toy soldier with which we all grew up. It only makes sense that we would want to play with them. |

If the following 54mm wargame pics are just a niche, they're a pretty sexy niche! link |

Amen to that. The British Civil Wars 54mm game at Salute this year was
. well, it inspired awe, that's all I'm saying, it inspired awe. |

Maybe, as are all scales. I play several different eras in 54mm. I know several other guys locally who also do. Thanks, John |

54mm games are becoming more common at conventions. I think it has something to do with the graying of the hobby, and the excellence and low cost of plastic figures these days. Look at the new Britains Deetail figures for ACW and WWII. You get a great paint job on a virtually indestructible figure, and it costs less than many 28mm metals, which requires loads of work (cleaing, priming, painting, sealing). Also, the choices in vehicles, (pre built collector pieces)is tremendous, and in most cases cheaper than the 1/35th scale kits. |

I did some last weekend with a group that apparently do it all the time (and will at Warfare) so niche rather than anything more restricted (whatever term that would be). |

All the King's Men has been running 54mm AWI and 1812 games at Historicon for the past two years. Very impressive! link A few years ago at Drums Along the Maumee (HMGS-GL Con in Toledo, OH), someone ran a 54mm WWI skirmish game. Beautiful table and fun game (so I heard afterwards). |

I ran a WWII 54mm game at my local show Warparty this year. I used my own Company Commander rules. Thanks, John |

It's not a wargaming scale at all |
20thmaine | 25 Nov 2009 1:44 p.m. PST |
It is a wargaming size though. Many people think of it as only for skirmishes, but I've seen photos of games played with HaT 54mm plastics (Warhammer Ancients IIRC), and there are also plastics in the scale for medievals, napoleonics, ACW, Renaissance, WWII. Could be a real goer IMHO. Even if only for skirmish games it sounds good, you'll only need a few dozen figures for any period of history, so will have more time to go to town on scenery. Sounds good to me. |
John Leahy | 26 Nov 2009 12:33 a.m. PST |
The only big issue I see for 54mm is the buildings. Once you can get past that it's all down hill. Great scale. Thanks, John |
20thmaine | 07 Jan 2010 5:42 p.m. PST |
For more modern periods there's a fair bit of modelling scenery in 1/35th – certsinly easy enough to get bombed out ruins for a modern skirmish. e.g. link |
| Scorpio | 08 Jan 2010 1:30 p.m. PST |
And a lot of 1/35th looks good for 28mm figs too. |
| christot | 06 Feb 2010 3:54 a.m. PST |
If 54mm is a "niche scale" (whatever that is) Whats 1/35th? (which is what most WWII "54mm" actually is) |
| Andrew May1 | 06 Feb 2010 4:21 a.m. PST |
For wargaming I guess 54mm is more of a niche scale, but it is also the scale that is attracting me more than all the others at present
