I don't have time to paint, nor do I have the money to send figs out to be painted, however I was thinking of buying hundreds of plastic figs (maybe ancients or dark ages)and just basing them and gaming with them right out of the box. Don't know if I'd want to go with 1/72 or 54mm--they both have their advantages.

I haven't gamed with unpainted plastic since about 1975.

Anyone else gaming with unpainted plastic?

Thought about it, i'm usually a bit of a paint nazi, but the zeveda (sp?) 100yrs war range looks nice and covers most the troop types you would want and it would be SO much easier and quicker.

I was thinking of just spraying the different armies, different primary colours (red = English, blue = France), maybe gloss for that old school look!

I just don't think I could live with not removing the flash :( which would add to the time spent prepping.

I did this to play command and colours Macs and Persians using 1/72 Zvezda based on pennies, sprayed white and ink washed to bring out the details. You could use different inks I suppose.

I thought it was okay in a pinch, but later painted the Alexandrians anyway. I have yet to muster the courage to paint Persians.

DBA can be played nicely with cardboard counters with troop types indicated on them or with cutout figs that are around the net.

How much are plastic figs? You can get pre-painted, plastic German made 75mm figures, Romans and Gauls off eBay for a couple dollars, new for $3. USD Cut back on the number of figs per base and you can get on to playing with painted figs for under $100. USD

Otherwise, why not use the unpainted plastic figs.

I have not. I too would rather have them painted. That said, buy, base and play. Then you can paint them at your leisure.

1/72 is what I would go with. Lots of variety in popular eras like classical and roman republic. Other eras will vary. Dark ages is a little weak right now.

Shame on you. What kind of visigoth plays with unpainted models? Shame.

All the time. Especially since Caesar released their fantasy line.

My kids and I have a long running fantasy/alt-history Alexandrian campaign – the young generals have faced down Porus' hordes, the skeletal minions of the Necromancer and are now marching towards a couple dozen samurai I picked up on a whim years ago…..The only painted troops are Alexander's army – straight out of the boxed set from HAT.

Get to spend quality time with the critters and not worry about something getting dropped or chipped…
