Do my incompetance i have too many dismounted confederate cavalry figures. These are mainly Dixon's wearing a slouch hat. Any suggestions what to do with these? (Donating them to a worthy member of this forum does not count.) Could I spread them amongst the Union figures? John |

Plenty of Union troopers wore slouch hats, particularly in th west. Don't use the ones with shotguns, though. |

Or use them as a Confederate dismounted cavalry unit functioning as infantry. There were a number of them in the Western and Trans-Mississippi theaters in the later part of the Wo-ah (that's Southern for War). Jim |

As ah disremember, confederate cav had to have their own horse. If yer horse got kilt and you couldn't get another___ya were infantry ! |

Lots of Union troopers, as noted wore hats, especially in the West – in fact, I think almost all of Wilder's brigade wore hats (mind you, they also had rifles) I like the idea of Home Guard |

You can also use them as Boers. |

Could just mix them in with the other CSA infantry maybe one per stand or whatever! Some occasional "variance" was not uncommon in many CSA units to say the least. Don't be fooled by the so called dismounted Cav units especially in the West AOT. Most of the Texas and Arkansas units never really saw many horses and were trained and armed as infantry despite being called cavalry! |

I must add that whatever was done in the "Far West" Trans Mississippi was possibly a whole different ball game. Likely a lot of "mounted infantry" who actully had horses as well as mounted Cavalry and lots of "independents" and semi-bandits armed with a plethora of weapon types on both sides, but especially the CSA! Long distances in Missouri and Arkansas to walk! |

Thank you folks. Would cavalry fighting as infantry wear their sword? John |

I have a number of guys mounted individually as skirmishers. If you put a regiment in open order I sprinkle a couple out front to give a more pleasing presentation. Los |

Would cavalry fighting as infantry wear their sword? Not those permanently dismounted. And a lot of Rebs didn't have swords to start with. Forrest didn't want "nary saber" in his command (tho he carried one himself). On the other hand, there was a Union cavalry brigade at the battle of Nashville, forget which one, that fought dismounted because there weren't enough horses for all the brigades, and it's commander was too stupid to tell the men to leave their sabers in camp. (They won anyway.) |
