Can anyone compare/contrast/recommend:

Edward Langel's book To Conquer Hell: The Meuse-Argonne 1918 to

Robert H Ferrell America's Deadliest Battle: Meuse-Argonne 1918

Thanks,

Bill.

My MilHist book club read To Conquer Hell for our October selection. It's quite anecdotal, so be prepared for that, and it's interesting in its treatment of Pershing; it was a fast read for me (but I was a history major, so YMMV), and just as an FYI, the maps SUCK (professional opinion, yes?).

Ferrell's book is supposed to be much more of a "scholarly" treatment, if that's what you seek.

Very helpful, thanks Andrew.

For those interested in this battle, just in at the OMM book shop:

ARGONNE DAYS IN WORLD WAR I by Horace Baker (edited by Robert H Ferrell). A first-hand poignant memoir recalls the Battle of Meuse-Argonne. Other books have been written about Pershing's offensive but this one tells what happened to the soldiers who carried out his order. 1 vol, 176 pgs 2007 US, UNIV'TY OF MISSOURI NEW-dj $30 USD
