Can anyone compare/contrast/recommend: Edward Langel's book To Conquer Hell: The Meuse-Argonne 1918 to Robert H Ferrell America's Deadliest Battle: Meuse-Argonne 1918 Thanks, Bill. |

My MilHist book club read To Conquer Hell for our October selection. It's quite anecdotal, so be prepared for that, and it's interesting in its treatment of Pershing; it was a fast read for me (but I was a history major, so YMMV), and just as an FYI, the maps SUCK (professional opinion, yes?). Ferrell's book is supposed to be much more of a "scholarly" treatment, if that's what you seek. |

For those interested in this battle, just in at the OMM book shop: ARGONNE DAYS IN WORLD WAR I by Horace Baker (edited by Robert H Ferrell). A first-hand poignant memoir recalls the Battle of Meuse-Argonne. Other books have been written about Pershing's offensive but this one tells what happened to the soldiers who carried out his order. 1 vol, 176 pgs 2007 US, UNIV'TY OF MISSOURI NEW-dj $30 USD Dennis from OMM onmilitarymatters.com |
