I've spent some time this week creating an series of islands for my micro naval ships from Tumbling Dice.

With care, these will fit with any era and can have buildings etc added for more modern times.

A step by step is here link

Andrew,

Excellent tutorial and an inspiration for my Archipelago Ameri-go. I will be interested to read how you create beaches; thin styrofoam, sand or paint.

What was the thickness of the Plasicard used for the bases?

Hey Andrew, some great ideas there, and some nice looking results, thanks for the 'how-to' – I'd been considering some of Kallistra's stand alone Hexon terrain pieces (escarpment, rocky outcrop, etc) to act as islands for my own 1/4800th – now perhaps with your inspiration, I should get more creative!

Let's see some more pics of the larger islands when they're done, cheers,
SteelonSand.

@Robert – Sorry no idea as it came out of the pile of off-cuts I have

@SteelonSand – Thanks for the comments. Love your blog and must get more into 2mm rather than reading about it

Cool tutorial. One question. does the smooth sandtex have any texture at all or completely smooth.?

Given up for good07 Nov 2009 3:48 p.m. PST

@Mishima
The sandtex top liquid is not as smooth as normal paint but no real 'grit' is visible. I have not mixed the pot up yet so I am unsure of the final content. I use it as the result seems much stronger than a normal paint and went for the smooth as it was cheaper than the gritty version and was in a sand colour.

@SteelonSand and any one else looking

I've posted the largest island I have created to date on the blog just now link

I was surprised by how well the bushes worked as trees grin
