I get a lot of strange requests for help through my blog, but this particular one I think we can help. A woman sent me a photo of her great grandfather in uniform and wants whatever information on his service that could be gleaned from the photo. You can see the photo and leave comments here: link I'm sure she'll be grateful for any help. |

I'd say it wasn't a military uniform – most of those would have had a higher collar in those days & some insignia on it. At that time in Germany almost every public servant (even teachers in public schools at one time) wore some sort of uniform. He could be a policeman or a postman. The medals are possibly more of a clue – they may point to a military background as I think most civilian medals were circular (yes they did give civilians medals – long service etc etc). |

I enlarged the medals if anyone cares to take another look. |

I have found a medal of similar shape to the crosses and it is a military medal from 1866. Obviously the detail is inadequate to be certain and this may be a common shape, I don't know. look at this link

The crosses look like campaign crosses from the 1860's, the round one could be a merit or service medal. If you ask here on the imperial German forum you are likely to get a more authoritive answer: gmic.co.uk/index.php? |
